Speech Therapist Courses

Willie Said:

What course do i need to be a speech therapist ?

We Answered:

There is a two year post-graduate course for it in the University of Limerick, Ireland.
Don't know about Essex, sorry.

Ellen Said:

How to become a speech therapist?

We Answered:

A speech therapist and speech pathologist are just two titles that mean the same thing. I use both depending on the situation.

You will need a master's in speech pathology which includes 400 hours of supervised clinical practica. The program and the pre-requisites will take you around 3 years. After you graduate you would need a license to practice and a certificate of clinical competence from the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association that you earn your first year on a probationary license.

Unfortunately probably very few classes from your previous degrees will will transfer because the master's classes and the pre-requisites are pretty specific to speech and language. But some child development type classes will probably transfer.

What courses and stuff would i need?

We Answered:

I went to search for you, and I'm appalled at how little info the Canadian college websites have on them. In the US, you'd go to the website of the medical, veterinary or grad school you're interested in, to the admissions section, and it would tell you what courses are pre-requisites for the program.

Almost all med and vet schools want:
1year of biology
1 year of inorganic chemistry
1 year of organic chemistry
1 year of physics

Most also want:
1 year of calculus

Some want things like mircobiology, biochemistry, English, etc. as well. Vet schools may want more zoology.

For speech therapy, there is a US standard re what must be taken as a pre-requisite to admission, given here: Standard III-A: The applicant must have prerequisite knowledge of the biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and the social/behavioral sciences.

For psychology at the grad level, usually some undergrad psych courses and a statistics course is required.

So...

In high school, take your math and science courses. Take psychology, if your school offers it. Take English composition, which is required for every school.

When you get to college, for the first year or two, you'll be getting in the sciences again. Take a couple of psych classes, which will be helpful no matter which direction you ultimately choose. All universities and liberal arts colleges will have the courses you need for any of the programs you've listed.

Now, hairstyling: Not taught in colleges, unless Canada is very different from the US that way. You'll need to do that at a beauty school.
