Speech Therapist For Children

Luis Said:

does anyone know of a good speech therapist for children under 5 years old? in indiana?

We Answered:

Do you have a birth-3 program? If not your Pediatrician can recommend one, or call your local public schools.

Ruth Said:

I want to become a speech therapist for children with autism. Whats a good school to study at?

We Answered:

Being a Speech and Language Pathologist is a really great career choice! There is a definite need for them across the U.S. You can put an emphasis on autistic children (that's a great internship opportunity) but don't limit yourself to this field only. If you are planning on working for a special education school system you will get exposed to all kinds of developmental disabilities which is very rewarding!

Anyway, to answer your question, Michigan State University or Grand Valley State are both excellent. Grand Valley also has an exceptional autism program.

Best wishes!

Virginia Said:

what is the role of a speech therapist, with young children?

We Answered:

I teach early childhood special education and the speech therapist that works with me not only helps with articulation and overall language development, but also helps support the children in all developmental domains, more specifically cognitive, fine motor, and social/emotional.

Christian Said:

Would I have better pay as a Speech Therapist or Physical Therapist for children?

We Answered:

If you are looking for flexibility- the Speech Therapist that is employed by a school district would be your best bet. Depending on the area that you live in, these positions are in demand and will provide a better than average wage.

If you are looking purely for the higher pay- then I would go with the Physical Therapist. As you know, they are in demand too. You might not get the same level of flexibility though when you start out; or you might consider taking a position that is just part-time as opposed to full-time. (If you go part-time you might not make more in the long run.)

Both will require that you get your Masters degrees in order to move on with your career. So from that stand point, they are pretty much equal.

Good Luck.
