Do Kids Get To Be Kids These Days???

We Answered:

I have to agree. We're so busy now trying to develop advanced maths skills, early reading, and having babies sign every need to us that we're forgetting about the important parts of childhood: playing, getting dirty, falling over and getting back up, making friends, activity and socialisation.
I also think a lot of people overlook the fact that fast tracking children like this often neglects the fundamental skills. It's like trying to teach them to run before they can walk. In the long run, I believe forcing a child into something that they're not ready for will actually hold them up.

I saw the same report, and I had the same reaction as you. Why do we need to push our children so hard in unnecessary ways and yet neglect the very basics of childhood that are actually the building blocks for their futures? It's true that 50 years ago nobody would have dreamt of teaching a baby to read, and yet overall there were lower rates of underachievement of basic academic skills.

I agree with you, while my kids are babies, I'll read to them. I don't want to see it the other way around!

Question about Andrea Yates (psychotic woman who drowned her children)?

We Answered:

Many times stays in mental wards aren't very long. Insurances don't want to pay for the stay in the hospital because it isn't cheap.
My idea is that usually not much is accomplished in a short stay in the mental ward. You may get medication and therapy but, a couple days isn't long enough.

I have a schizophrenic family member. They needed to be contained in the mental ward because they were a danger to themselves and us. Sure that isn't where I wanted them to be but, they were dangerous and would have hurt themselves or us. I am a support of inpatient treatment because if that had not happened with a long term stay for my family member they would have been dead or in jail. There were a few times that my family member was a charity case in the hospital because the insurance monies ran out.

I have questions about autism?

We Answered:

im sorry for the condition of your son.

My son was the same, and they said the same things about him, he also had a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and a physical therapist. Turns out my sons problem was that his ears were filled with fluid that affected his hearing and obviously speech, and also affected his equilibrium. I know how much it sucks not to know what is going on and honestly everyone will tell you something different.

I hope that you get your answer soon and that it is a simple to resolve as ours was.
