Speech Therapy Articulation

Alfredo Said:

How long does it take to remediate Speech articulation problems?

We Answered:

I guess it would depend on the severity of the disorder and the motivation of the child to change their speech. However, you should notice some change in 3-5 months and hopefully remediation won’t take longer than 1-3 years for just an articulation error.

Irene Said:

speech therapy question for someone to answer?

We Answered:

What you are describing sounds a lot like oral apraxia. This is a disorder that affects the motor movements of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, and jaw. It can also affect other areas of the body and make initiation of movements difficult. There are many programs designed for this specific speech disorder, but I would start with the work from Edith Strand. She is an expert and focuses almost exclusively on apraxia in young children. Most therapy needs to go on for quite a while, but it is possible to rework the nerve endings so progress can be made. I hope your daughter's speech therapist understands and accepts that this may help her. Good luck to you!

How much should I expect to pay for speech therapy for a 5-year old with mild articulation problems?

We Answered:

Mine charged 80 an hour for once a week at her office. My insurance covered the evaluation so I am not sure how much that was. It's crazy, I know! Can your friend give you any ideas on things to try with him at home that might help?

Heidi Said:

Anyone have any children that have a speech impairment such as language and articulation enrolled at Sylvan?

We Answered:

I also have heard that Sylvan is a great place to go and get help - it provides a one-on-one setting. But I wonder how much help with lang. and artic. your child will get at Sylvan. Are you looking for extra help with that too? Or just with his/her academic study?

Search around your hometown for a private SLP or visit your local university that has a Communication Disorders (make sure it's Communication Disorders - it's different than just "Communications") or Speech Pathology program. You can hire some SLP students for tutoring and probably will get a little more specialized help.

I assume that Sylvan doesn't hire SLPs to work there since an SLP can make $$ in private practice or in the school system. I would check to make sure though. It does sound like anyone with just a degree in teaching could conduct speech therapy, but then why would you have to get your masters and a year externship to get your license in SLP?

Another suggestion is for you to talk with the SLP at his/her school and find activities you can do with your child to help his/her speech. They'll probably be more than happy to assist you with this, and you won't have to pay extra for someone to do it.
