Jamie Said:

My 4 year-old "autistic" son just had a conversation with his dad...?

We Answered:

Get an independent evaluation done with your son. He does NOT sound like he has Autism. Someday there will be a medical test for Autism. When that day comes I believe a LOT of people will no longer have Autism.

A major cause of the "epidemic" rise in Autism rates is due to misdiagnosis! Children with VERY mild symptoms are being diagnosed with ASD. It is ridiculous how children with mild social and language delays are being labeled as "mildly autistic". These kids are getting a HUGE disservice because many of them WILL outgrow their "Autism" and go on to be perfectly "normal" but the label is going to hold them back. It is really sad that so many parents choose to get their children labeled as Autistic when there is really a speech delay or behavior problem. Most of these children simply need a bit more time to grow up. A misdiagnosis will not do these kids any favors!! It just makes things harder in the long run.

Nathaniel Said:

How much power does the special education program at my school have over a diagnosis?

We Answered:

developmental dealy isn't even an eligibility category for special ed in the US.

they need to do their own test (IQ) that shows his IQ is over 70 to deny the diagnosis

i assume the diagnosis is from a doctor.

behavior does not define intellectual disability...cogntive ability does

people with intellectual disability can be in a typical class with support--especially in the early years

the term developmentally disabled describes the condition (intellectual disability, severe physical disability, severe psychiatric disability)

Glenn Said:

Does this sound like autism?

We Answered:

I would definitely get a second opinion. I have 3 children one has autism. I am no expert but I am not seeing the signs of autism. You are blessed, if he is by chance, he is doing wonderful. Good luck to you. God bless
