Speech Therapy Cards
Brad Said:
Speech-Language Pathologists...read question please!?We Answered:
The general rule of apraxia therapy is to work from gross to fine. You want to start with vowels because they open the vocal tract and are easier to elicit.Start with the lax, posterior vowel,, then work toward the tense ones. You are right about successive approximation.
Once the vowels are mastered, work on voiceless stops; I always worked from the posterior sounds toward the frontals.
I used the voiceless sounds first, as voicing was just one more thing for the child to try to do all at once.
Use the cards, say by showing a cow, and elicit the /u/ sound. Run through all the cards, but just do the open vowels. Once the child can do all the sounds spontaneously when confronted with the card, move through the sequence of acquisition.
Tactile feedback is essential. With back plosives, for example, you can put the child's hand on your neck where it meets the mandible. Of course, model, model, model, and provide auditory and visual feedback.
Whatever you do, NEVER expect an apraxic child to produce an entire word right away!
