Speech Therapy Center

Jay Said:

At what age should a child be discharged from speech Therapy?

We Answered:

Each child is different it is hard to really state a solid age because there are different circumstances for each child.

Some of the questions to consider before your child is dismissed from therapy could include the following:
~Is he using the compensatory strategies that the therapist has provided independently?
~Has he met/reached his goals and is he independently (no prompting, cues) performing the skills?
~Is his speech and language considered age appropriate?
~If your child is displaying carry over of his skills in multiple settings (i.e. in school, home, etc.)?

A great site to refer to would be ASHA's which is listed below, there is a question on the frequently asked questions list, I think it is the seventh question down from the top of the page and it asks: When should a person be discharged from speech-language pathology treatment?

Be sure to consult with your speech language pathologist about concerns he/she may still have about your child's speech and language, collaborate with him/her to discuss your concerns as a parent.

I hope this helps

speech therapy?

We Answered:

check with the schools. .Ask to have your child screened.through child find. they will evaluate your child for free and provide services for free if your child qualifies. If the child qualifies the school will be required to offer to provide them with speech and language therapy as well as any other interventions they may need. As a parent you do not need to accept what they offer, it is your choice. If speech therapy is needed you would work with the school to create an individualized education plan (IEP) for the child. If the child does not qualify for special ed services within the school the school would be able to provide you with a list of referrals or ideas.
