Is it easy to get a job as a paralegal?

We Answered:

It can be competitive, particularly in the big cities. In smaller towns, you have a better chance.

You may want to start out as a legal secretary to see if you like the work before getting a degree and finding out you hate legal work (kind of like your speech therapy issue). It'll give you insight into the field to see if you like it, you'll make some connections, and you'll familiarize yourself with the law. That way, when you get your degree, you can say "I also have X years of experience as a legal secretary", and they'll know that you 1) know your stuff and 2) can do it.

Dialect and spelling?

We Answered:

I am a speech therapist and a mom of 3. I think for a 5 y.o your daughter is doing awesome! Phonetic spelling is how ALL kids learn to spell in English - it will all work out as she learns./ For now, please, do not worry about accents.

Imagine is regional accents (and foreign accents) were influencing everybody's spelling? What would have happened to people who move around a lot, like military families? Or our President, who had lived in Hawaii, Indonesia, NY, Chicago and Washington?

I LOVE "chree"! I am from Chicago, my husband is form Colorado by way of Wyoming, Kentucky and now New York. 6 yrs had to move (with my 3 sons) to upstate New York - imagine accents! All medial Ts nad Ds are just swallowed: button is "bu'uhn", "putting" is "pu'ing" - but everybody is spelling and reading just fine.

Here are some ideas of how ot encourage spelling acquisition:

For now, let her try it her way and show her the right way only if she asks, since for a 5 y.o conventional English spelling is often overwhelming.

Talk to her teachers for feedback and ideas.

Best wishes!

Shane Said:

where in Chicago, can I find a speech therapist for a child older than 3?

We Answered:

Public Schools have special classes for children with di8sabilities-----he would have an IEP--not just thrown into a regular prechool class if he is not ready--

some districts do use full inclusion where the class is mixed 1/2 with delays and 1/2 typically developing--but they should accommodate his needs by providing a special ed teacher/aide..

1st call your health insurance--it is difficult to get it covered if he was born with a delay as opposed to developing teh dealy after an illness or injury

look in the yellow pages under speech

ask your pediatrician

call local major hospitals

Discuss It!
