Speech Therapy Classes

Floyd Said:

3 yrs & 5 months has speaking problems, he speaks few words only,But the speech therapy said he has no problem?

We Answered:

The fact that your boy is having a delay in speaking is perfectly natural when he is trying to absorb three languages! I think I wouldn't have spoken until I was 10 if I'd had to try to do that!

Children speak.

Unless they are developmentally disabled or severely autistic, children speak. But it feels awful to speak and feel like you are speaking "wrong," and trying to parse out English from Chinese from whatever your OWN language is must be terribly confusing for such a young boy! I can tell you this: anything you do to humiliate him or embarrass him will only make this problem worse-- if you physically punish him, he may be delayed several years (not that I suspect you will, but that I know other parents in the past sometimes have). If the speech therapist does not see a problem, then neither do I and neither, I think, should you.

The most AMAZING thing is that when your boy finally DOES speak he will have THREE languages at his command! That is the BEST gift a parent can give a child, after unconditional love and food and shelter. Being able to speak THREE languages like a native speaker, that is a gift greater than a mountain of gold! Please be patient and loving with your son. He is going to blow your mind when he begins to talk, and he is going to stun the world no matter what else he does. I envy him.

Elsie Said:

Is it a sign to take speech therapy classes?

We Answered:

If you just speak with an accent, speech therapy will not change this. There is nothing wrong with having an accent. Be proud of your background and the fact that you can speak three languages!

There are classes that teach people to speak with different accents, but these are usually only used for actors and actresses so that they can play different roles. So technically, sure, you could take one of these classes and learn to speak with an American accent, but I think they are both expensive and time consuming, and I also do not think you need them.

You are normal! Plenty of people have accents. Accents are beautiful! Listen to your friends while they watch a movie with British actors and see if anyone says "oh I love the way they talk." I bet they do.

Lastly, if you are really worried about your crowded teeth, consider seeing a dentist. Whether or not this actually affects your speech, if it concerns you, have it checked out.

Gertrude Said:

how do i go about teaching a speech therapy class? What kind of degree would i need?

We Answered:

Speech therapy is NOT a standard classroom licensure. However, the coursework is usually through a university's Education College.

Licensure requires a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology (or "Communication Disorders"), and passing professional standardized tests.

Speech therapy- what extra qualifications do I need to work in Canada?

We Answered:

the best answer to your question would be to review the canadian speech language pathology associations website and compare it to your schooling. it appears that they strongly encourage all SLPs to obtain the CASLPA certification, which is recognized internationally as well.

during my schooling, i only took a brief class on audiology as well in obtaining my masters degree in speech-language pathology. however, it seem universities are constantly changing requirements, so i would check with the SLP board of that country, or university that you are interested in attending.

and a few extra classes to get a refresher course in a new country could never hurt! go for it!

good luck with your move!
