Gordon Said:

What is the best non medicine treatment for severe depression?

We Answered:

shock treatment is barbaric - and a huge gamble, and there are huge consequences, even if it does work.
The fact that she has choppy speech - and that she was given lithium implies that there is a more complex etiology going on here.
U of M has some research going on with trans-cranial magnetic resonance, perhaps you could contect them?

I wish I had some answers for you. I have had severe depression myself for several decades that started in my early teens. I found that deciding to actually MAKE my life more worthwhile was what I had to do. Pills didnt cut it for me either.
Yeah, somedays I still get weepy for no reason. But things did get a lot better, gradually. First I had to identify problems, then goals, and impedances to those goals, and goal solving tasks.

As an example....I was lonely, I had no freinds...
so why didn't I have any freinds.....
I was hard to talk to, I was too self absorbed to listen to other people
I only wanted to talk about how life sucked
I was really shy
My body language told people that I wasn't interested in them
The way I dressed and didn't wear make up told other people that I wasn't even interested in myself....
etc.
Then I had to DO something about it.
I had to get up early and do my hair and make up (side benefit, after about three months of this, I felt better about myself)
I had to go out and buy some clothes - which I had always abhored doing, but I knew I had to (benefit, people said I looked nice, which made me feel better)
I started asking the fellow behind the counter at the gas station how his day has been - then said I hoped he had a nice day.)

before I bore the daylights out of you, Y'know, the point is, I got to a point where I was certainly going to kill myself, or I was going to change somethings in my life.

I had to change the "externals" (what I did) before I could change the "internals" (how I felt and reacted to life. One thing that we know, is that while brainchemistry changes mood - the fat that changing behavior can change brain chemistry is one thing that doesnt get talked about much (its called Neurogenesis).

Anyhow - good luck.

3 yr old boy who has developmental delay and seizures?

We Answered:

Wow. I'm sorry. Have you tried any other medication? I have a heard a similar story - one of my student's had seizures and kind of "out grew" them. He's six now. He's doing well with little effects from his tumultuous first few years. I hope something similar happens with your son.....

Parent looking for autism help?

We Answered:

Contact your local school - they will be able to help you access early intervention services based on their evaluation. So what if a MD diagnos' , you would still have to find therapies on your own. By going to the school he will get access to early speech therapy and some preschool activities based on his needs that will help him be more functional - and the school does it.

My 1 year baby Hearing Problem. PLEASE ANSWER!!@@?

We Answered:

You are on the right track for a child of this age. Do get as much information for your child as possible from the specialist and speech therapist on how you as parents can help her at home and look into learning sign language it will help tremendously as your child gets older. With hearing loss, your speech is not developed correctly so early intervention is excellent and what is needed. Keep up the great work. Best Wishes.

UK: What do you do when the NHS have no record of your child?

We Answered:

I confused as to how this has taken 3 years to correct. Taking your son to a walk in clinic to avoid the hassle is not the answer. Obviously he must have a birth certificate. Take yourself, your son and his birth certificate to your health centre explain whats happened and tell them you want to start from the start and register him with a dr.
