Speech Therapy Devices

Casey Said:

Any good reasonably priced anti stuttering devices?

We Answered:

Since I come from a family of stutterers, I have kept up with any information I can get on stuttering over the years. Those people who I have talked with and read web posts from have said that the devices often work at first but lose their effect over time. They are useless in any situation other than when you are the only one speaking as they play back every sound in the room/area even a siren or loud car going by. Most have said they wasted their money on them, even those with a moneyback guarantee! What helped my family the most was The Stuttering Foundation's book Self Therapy for the Stutterer and one uncle went to a therapist who used that in her sessions. They now have a great web site.

Contact The Stuttering Foundation of America as that is where our family got help. Their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" worked wonders after working through it step by step.

What is the best electronic speech device to help stuttering problems?

We Answered:

Do your research by reading posts by stutterers who have tried such things. Unfortunately, most of them that I have read are negative. If you have money to throw away, sure - give it a try. It might help you. But from what I have read online and heard from family and friends who stutter, you're better off working with a specialist who has been trained to treat stuttering (you'll find them listed at www.stutteringhelp.org) or by working through Self Therapy for the Stutterer by Malcolm Fraser. In the brochures section of stutteringhelp.org, you can dowload and print a brochure written just for employers. I personally know of three people who stutter who took that brochure with them on an interview and started the interview with presenting the brochure and telling the interviewer that they stuttered. They said just getting that out in the open and up front helped them relax and stutter less.

Being hired with their knowing you stutter is better than being hired because you didn't stutter while using a device then their finding out later that you hid the fact that you stutter. I read a post on the Stuttering Forum about someone who did that and regretted it.

It's your call, but if I were you, I would join Toastmasters, get a therapist listed on stutteringhelp.org, get the book Self Therapy for the Stutterer, join all the online stuttering support groups, and/or anything rather than any device. Of course, I would have started before graduating from college and trying to get a job.

There is no quick fix for stuttering, but you can (if you put forth the effort and time) gain much toward fluency.

I have seen posts of people who did well by getting a prescription through their family doctor before an event like a presentation that they felt the need to not have a bit of stuttering. Join a group and post your question to stutterers instead of here. You'll get responses from people who have tried a device or medication and can give you their own personal experience. All I can go by is what I have read online.

If you have learned technigues from a specialist in stuttering, you probably just need to practice, practice, practice. Unfortunately, there is no cure and what is learned in speech therapy must become a part of the daily routine.

Annie Said:

How have you coped with your stuttering?

We Answered:

Nope, doesn't skip a generation and it is genetic. Several uncles and cousins of mine stutter. The best help we found was from The Stuttering Foundation of America and their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer." For most stutterers, the stuttering is less when they don't try to hide it. That is most likely why you didn't stutter around the therapist. You knew that you were there because of your stuttering and that the therapist knew you stuttered, so that removed the tension of trying to keep from stuttering.

Go through the 12 steps in the book and diligently work on each step before moving on to the next. Don't just read the book through. Practice, practice, practice and work on the steps over and over.

The book can be found at some public libraries or purchased for just a few dollars to cover shipping and handling from the nonprofit Foundation that was started by a stutterer. Check out their web site at www.stutteringhelp.org.
