Speech Therapy Drooling

Charlene Said:

My 3 year old son..............?

We Answered:

My son went through a similar thing at three. I put my mom through it when I was 1 1/2 for adenoids; repeatedly from ages 2-6 for tubes; and 7 for the tonsils.

My mom says she wishes she would have just gotten the tonsils done when I was 1 1/2 and they were doing the adenoids. I had constant ear infections and even have some hearing loss from it. She was so afraid of the surgeries that she would put everything off until the situation was out of hand and there were no other options. This really made the situation more stressful for all of us in the end.

However, I 100% understood where she was coming from when it came time for my son to have his surgery. There is no feeling worse than your child being out of your control. Even though I had every assurance in the world that the adenoid/tonsil surgery was safe and routine, it was still horrible for me in that waiting room!

My son was fine of course. He took the whole thing much better than I did. He was delighted with the endless popsicles after surgery since he'd never had one before. He loved the extra attention and was acting completely normal within a day or two. I am so glad in retrospect that we just got everything done at once (at my mother's insistence!).

In the end, you do have to remember that the surgery is safe. The surgery will keep him healthier and happier in the future. You will not regret this decision at any point after the surgery is over.

Then, grab your husband's hand, sit tight and wait until it's all been done and everything's okay!

Borderline low muscle tone is an otherwise advanced child?

We Answered:

Agreed - low muscle tone has nothing to do with intelligence, or any other issue for the most part - its a developmental issue. My son has slightly poor core muscle strength, so it makes it difficult to sit upright for long periods of time.

My son's speech was delayed as well, so to cover all his developmental issues, we had him evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. I would recommend this highly, because they'll assess all areas of your child's development, and then can recommend therapists that can help your child overcome this.

The drooling and speech delay all go together - I'm assuming he has poor oral motor skills. I know for my son, they did a lot of exercises with him, like always drinking through a straw, blowing whistles or recorders, practicing certain mouth formations, etc. He works with both an occupational therapist and a physical therapist and it works wonders. They will also give you exercises you can do at home.

Good luck, I hope this helps!!

Autistic like behaivor.and Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

An occupational therapist (OT) works generally with fine motor skills such as picking up small items, pencil grip etc. They will probably assess him by looking at things such as how he holds a pencil, how steady his drawing is (e.g. can he draw a line, can he draw a cross, can he draw a circle), can he pick up small objects such as small beads or grains of rice, can he manipulate small objects such as thread bead onto a peice of string or place coins in a money box and has he fifured out his hand dominance yet (does he have a preference for left or right hand) they will also look at whether he can "cross the midline" (put one hand/arm over to the oppposite side of his body.
They will then provide activities/exercises or run sessions with him if necessary

When did yotur toddler stop drooling?

We Answered:

You may want to ask if it's possible that he has low muscle tone in his jaw. My nephew was a constant drooler and his mouth would often hang open. He was diagnosed with muscle tone issues.

There are a lot of things you can do to strengthen his muscles like squishing marshmallows with his tongue to the roof of his mouth.

I suggest demanding that they stop putting off your child's therapy, be his advocate, if you don't push it won't happen.
Good luck!
