Speech Therapy Evaluation

Cathy Said:

Speech therapy evaluation?

We Answered:

My son had one at the beginning of the year from his school. They will go through and first ask a lot of questions seeing what they comprehend to make sure they know what words they are trying to get them to say. Then they will go through each of the basic letter sounds and compare his results with other children in his same age range. As far as I can remember there are 5? different basic ones other than the ones like lisp or st-udder which you would have noticed by now. If he has one don't worry at least you are able to have something done about it now. With my son I could understand him for the most part but he would get so frustrated with the people around him because they couldn't understand what he was saying. It is so nice now because he is able to talk to the other kids on a normal level rather than just sit back and be quiet.

Also check with your local school district for Speech therapy. Speech therapist on their own can add up to be a little bit expensive.

Emily Said:

Two year old and speech therapy?

We Answered:

As children learn to speak, they use normal developmental 'errors' or 'processes'. The examples you've given are called 'fronting' (g produced as d) and 'stopping' (longer f produced as a short p sound). These two processes you have described are appropriate processes for a two-year-old. They generally disappear by three to three-and-a-half years of age.

Obviously, if you are at all concerned, you should take him to be evaluated by a speech therapist. The speech therapist can also tell you what is expected for your child's age.
