Speech Therapy For Toddler

Heidi Said:

My toddler has been stuttering for several months?

We Answered:

Your best source of help for stuttering, especially with a young child is the non-profit Stuttering Foundation of America. Check out www.stutteringhelp.org and you will find tips for parents of ways they can help, if and when a child needs to see a speech therapist who specializes in treating stuttering, a list of referrals to specialists all over the world, online videos, helpful books you can find at your library, and the causes of stuttering.

Dora Said:

What are ways that you can get your toddler to speak better?

We Answered:

Did your speach therapist recomment wall push ups? Ours did, it helps strengthen the muscles in the back of neck and head which helps in pronunciation. Getting a 2 year old to do them might be tricky, but you might be able to make it a game.

Also like everyone one said, speak very clearly and say the
sounds that the child has trouble with ALL the time. As he gets a little older...Play games where you say a word and he says a rhyme like "can" and he says "man" sometimes they make up words that rhyme but don't exist, just let it go as the sound is what is important.

Make sure you are saying full works like BANANA instead of NANA and all that.
And remember he thinks he is saying the word correctly so don't be too hard on him. Most people don't understand what a 2 year old is saying unless they are around them all the time, as long as he gets better by the time he starts pre-school and playing with friends more it shouldn't effect him too much.

Hugh Said:

can anyonesay what speech therapy is?Is it only for autustic children?

We Answered:

My mom is a speech pathologist in an elementary and junior high school. A lot of what she does is work on letters that kids can't pronounce (like "L" or "R"), lisps, some ESL, some developmental delays, and deaf and hard of hearing. It is not only for autistic children, and children with normal or above average IQ may also need some form of speech therapy.

You may want to take him to an audiologist to have his hearing checked as part of a comprehensive early intervention strategy. A speech therapist may also be able to help you. And you may be able to get some state assistance in paying for testing and early intervention strategies.
