Speech Therapy For Toddlers
Joyce Said:
Anyone ever done speech therapy at home?We Answered:
Constant correction is the way we always did it in schools and nurseries. E.G. "I ant all" You would say "Okay then, you want the ball? Here is the ball" You may sound silly for a while but if you keep it up she should begin mimicking you. There are also lots of good books on speech therapy for children and toddlers, just go to your local library and they should have a whole section. Also don't worry too much, honestly at 22months it is fairly common for speech to be hard to understand, as long as she IS speaking I wouldn't be too worried. Hope this helps.xxx

Speech therapy for toddlers?We Answered:
my first child spoke in sentences at 6 months. by 18 mos.you could have a meaningful conversation with her.5years later i had a son who at 3yrs old could say only mama, dada an wah wah.by 4 he couldn't shut up.my granddaughter rpoke but no one could under stand her evev though she was repeating the same things and obviously speaking a "language" After much testing etc it was decided that she had created her own language which is common in twins but not in only children. She started speech therapy about 3 yrs old 2 days a week and her mother reads to her constantly. At 4and a half we can understand her most of the time unless she is speaking rapidly. Her 2 and a half year old sister speaks as well as her sister.Keep with the speech therapy but change therapists.we thought my son was retarded then but his iq is"superior genius".It is just that there so many variables that you should not worry. many children are not verbal at 2 or3.BUT your son needs to like his therapist.Get a new one and don't worry. you don't know all the issues we had with my grandchild as far as health and it all worked out so don't worry. he'll be using the computer soonJesse Said:
Does Speech Therapy for Toddlers really work?We Answered:
ASL is awesome in cases of significant speech delay. My son had a 12 month expressive delay at 27 months old and acted much like your son does. Within a week of learning his first signs, he was grunting to get my attention, then signing to me. His tantrums dropped by 90% within weeks. It does seem like your husband would be right, but he is dead wrong. It has been shown that children who sign generally replace their signs verbally first, then learn new words. It was that way with my son too. We made sure to speak as we signed with him. He used his ASL for about 6 months before he was better at speaking than he was at signing. To this day (18 months later) he does occasionally use his sign unconsciously as he speaks, or purposely if he knows his articulation is bad on a particular word. Plus...if you really think about it, ASL could be considered a second language and be very beneficial in his teen/adult life. When I was a young teen I learned some ASL from my mother ( she was actually a translator at one point). When I was 16 I worked in a bakery and on a busy saturday I noticed my co-worker getting very frustrated trying to serve a deaf customer. I told her to switch customers with me. Apparently the customer wanted just one of some sweet rolls that were only sold by the half dozen. I was able to use my basic ASL and explain things to the customer. The customer left happy with a similar item, and my co-worker was relieved.Olga Said:
Average cost for speech therapy for toddler? We Answered:
call your local elementary school and ask them for the contact info for the local early intervention program. EI is made for families like yours who know that a problem may be present and do not have the financial resources to get the needed therapy.my son was in about the same posititon that your son was in...at 24 months he had a 10 word vocabulary. he was so frustrated and it showed. it was taking a toll on me mentally too since he had horrible tantrums when he wasnted to do something and i could not understand what he wanted. the doctor had the same feeling that some other posters have "wait and see....he will eventually catch up". I just knew in my heart that there was a problem. the day I left his 24 month check up I found a flyer for a developmental screen for our local birth to 3 program. the lady at the daycare said that they were all booked, but I called anyway. the lady at the EI program said "oh we can see him next week!" when I told her he was 2 . they agreed that he had a problem and sent him to a speech therapist. She sort of tested him ( he did not speak enough for a real test) and said that he was communicating at a 15 month level ( he was 27 months old).
so we started going to see her for 30 minutes 2x per week. within a few weeks she was telling me "my gut is telling me apraxia or aphasia" and most of the tools she used were for apraxia. within about 2 months he had a working verbal vocabulary of like 40 words and a sign language vocabulary of about the same. after 4 months he had a "language explosion" and started speaking in full sentences. just last month....after almost 8 months of therapy we finally did a formal apraxia test and he scored as moderate to severe apraxia. the funny thing is that he has such a good vocabulary that people do not believe he is in therapy!
feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions. I do have an excellent article on develpomental apraxia that I can send you as an e-mail attachment. Just send me your real e-mail ( YA does not let you send attachments) and ask for it.

What happens during speech therapy for toddlers? We Answered:
my suggestion to u would be ask the speech therapist..there is only so much u can do with a 2 year old..most whom are willful and stubborn...my son was born with a cleft and he has had a speech therapist from birth, however, he really hasnt experienced any speech problems yet..but anyways most speech therapist have an amazing ability to get a childs attention and keeping it for the time they need to...u also might want to consider on getting their hearing checked or get an ENT to look at their ears sometimes this can hinder their speech developmentPaul Said:

My daughter made no improvements in speech from 18 months to 2 yearsThank god, my doctor got her on list to be tested, birth to three and speech therapy
When she was three, she went to preschool at the school district plus extra speech and OT
When my daughter started Kindergarten, she was barley saying three words. I was luck(took 8 months) got my Daughter in a program before school. She she left Kindergarten, she was speaking in full sentences
She two is not on the autism scale, but needs a para
They do not know why she has delays, they can not figure it out

Toddler speech therapy?We Answered:
Hi there! Expressively, here is what a two and half-year-old typically can say: at least 50 meaningful words, produce two-word phrases frequently, and imitate three-word phrases with ease.If you do have some concerns and you live in the states, you can have your child evaluated for free under the Early Intervention program. If he has a language delay, he can qualify to receive speech therapy for free. If you have more questions, please feel free to contact me.
