Management Information Systems or Speech Therapy?

We Answered:

Unless you have a passion for it. speech pathology isn't the way to go. The work requires 100% of your attention to task 100% of the time. Every hour of the day is different than the last, so there's lots of gear-shifting. It's emotionally and physically exhausting. The first 5 years I practiced, I was barely huuman when I got home in the evening, and as a single parent, it was really rough.
Speech pathology requires another year of clinical training AFTER the master's is finished. It's called the "Clinical Fellowship Year", or CFY and yields the ASHA-awarded Certificate of Clinical Competence ("CCC") and most states require it for licensure. I've never seen a job advertised where it wasn't a requirement.
Most jobs are in nursing homes, and are per diem rather than salaried. Home health personnel are usually independent contractors. Salaried positions are typically reserved for school and most hospital jobs, though directors of rehab departments in nursing homes are salaried.
Salary can be significantly higher than $70,000, depending on setting and location (see salary.com). When I retired after 20 years, I was making $110,000.
Working in the corporate world, there is more and more telecommuting and job-sharing.
I wouldn't give much energy to gender questions. Colleges' and universities' graduating classes are roughly 55% women, with men falling behind more every year.
