Speech Therapy Lessons

Douglas Said:

How can i fix my lisp for singing?

We Answered:

You mentioned that you had therapy, but that you tried really hard and concentrated when you were there. When you get out in the real world it is harder to maintain because you have so many things going on. The good news, is that you can make your speech sounds when you are focused on them. It just needs to become more automatic and rote for you. If I were you, I would journal about your speech each day - writing about what /s/ words I said well and which ones needed work each day, practicing both the GOOD and the not so good words in front of the mirror, focusing on a few key /s/ words each day (like a word of the day type of thing). I would also record myself and listen to the playback whenever possible. Awareness and practice are KEY in my opinion. YOU CAN DO IT! :)

Am I wrong for asking to record a speech therapy exercise?

We Answered:

I'm sorry but you are wrong. It's not a good idea to record those sessions. I am inclined to believe that you may try to become a "surrogate" speech therapist, between sessions, and do more harm than good. It would be very tempting to substitute the recordings for the therapy which would further defeat the purpose.

I understand your feeling of entitlement because you pay $45 insurance co-payment and have expense of the trip. Sometimes we have to "bite the bullet" and do what is best in spite of the pain.

My friend has speech problems?

We Answered:

barrow and sehrup? i think what your friend needs is a slap across the face...no offense, but if she can't pronounce simple words correctly, she needs to be striked from the gene pool immediately. do we honestly want children running around shouting "ZERRO!" and "MELK!"? i don't think so...

Sharon Said:

Have you ever just wanted to smack some sense into someone when it comes to their kids (sorry this is long)?

We Answered:

That is SO sad! What a great brother you have, though. At least someone is taking an interest in this poor little boy.

My cousin and his wife come to mind for me. They have three boys and they are ALL wild. We were all at my grandparents' house for Christmas and they were throwing toys around and one hit my little niece(she's 8 and a half months old now). The parents did nothing. No time out, no pulling them to the side and talking to them, no taking away toys. I guess it's just easier to let others deal with them?

Is there a website where I can give myself speech therapy and voice lessons?

We Answered:

I did a quick search, and found nothing by programs they want you to buy, and there's question about whether or not it would work. I would suggest a couple of options. If you have insurance, go to a professional speech therapist. This is their career and they're really the best ones for this kind of thing. However, if you don't have insurance or can't afford it, you may want to look on a website like amazon.com or do a general search for speech therapy programs and try out one of the products best. Another thing that may help if you have the patience to do is use the same mateirals one would study to become a speach therapist. The tools they are learning, you could easily learn and use for yourself. Good luck!

3 Yr Old Son With Major Speech Delay, Having Speech Therapy, Referred to Paediatrician. Need Insight Please?

We Answered:

I did not speak until age 5 and then I spoke in sentences, I did not read until age 8 and, again, I read in sentences.

I have execellent eye contact, but I am autistic though I was not diagnosed until I was aged 51.

Lack of oxygen to the brain would cause cerebral palsy and this is usually picked up before the age of 18 months.

My feeling is that you are putting the cart before the horses, yes i know it is a terribly worrying time, but wait for the results first.

Speculating about the possible results will increase your stress levels and anxieties.

Try to wait and see, it could just be that he is a late starter.

Speech therapy?!?!?!?!?!?!?

We Answered:

The length of time for an older teen or an adult to fix one speech sound depends completely on the client's motivation and attitude toward hard work.
My last client before I retired was a 16-year-old with a frontal lisp (/s/ problem). At the start, she was totally unable to pronounce the sound even in isolation. At the end of the second week, not only was she saying the sound consistently, she had already carried it over to conversational speech. It took only 8 visits because she was so motivated and worked very hard, both in and out of the therapy sessions. You may be able to do the same.
Developmental articulation disorders like yours aren't covered by any insurance company I've ever worked with. They only cover post-surgical or other acquired problems, such as a stroke, other neurological disorders (Parkinson's, etc.), and some ENT diagnoses.
Sessions can cost as much as $150/session if in a hospital or clinic setting. I suggest contacting a speech pathologist or two and ask if they will see you privately for $50 or $60 per session after work. The standard treatment regimen is twice per week following a complete evaluation.
Hope this helps!
