Is there any reliable treatment for Down Syndrome?

We Answered:

you're spot on about Down's and its management. as there is a congenital genetic problem, it's untreatable per se, but we can manage some of the consequences and look out for the complications.

Am I over-reacting about leaving my husband over lack of a job and denial about our autistic daughter?

We Answered:

No, you're not over reacting. He sounds like a deadbeat and you're better off!

Now, as far as the autism goes... I am a teacher with 10 students in my class. One of them is officially diagnosed with Autism and I have 7 others just like him who have yet to be officially diagnosed. Oh, the remaining 2 are A.D.D. children (Yes, I have my hands full lol).

Let me ask you a question, do you wear all the colors of the rainbow and all the things of every material out there? If the answer is no, then guess what? You're human and so is your daughter!

Everyone has a preference. I don't wear yellow or red because I think I look weird in them (especially yellow, I seem to think I look like a lemon, hehe). I don't wear Pima material either (too clingy).

You mentioned he sugggests that she excercise more? Is she active in gym? Does she do much in her OT (occupational therapy) sessions? Does she even get OT?

There are many "parents of autistic children" groups out there. Join one to ease your mind, i'm sure there are answers to other worries you may have within those groups.

Here's more help! I use these often as extra help with the students.

Possible mental impairment?

We Answered:

I honestly don't think you have an IQ issue... look at what you wrote--it's pretty good writing, actually. I think it's called being "shy." You need to do some more social activities, speak up--don't feel self-conscience. It may be an issue with social interaction. Don't get too caught up in thinking "I talk so different from everyone." When you're feeling self-conscience, fear easily produces that preception. If you listen closely, we all speak in a different mode or style--some more exotic than others, but not wrong. Many speaking issues in elementary-aged children simply result from a lack of social involvement--but it's just because they're of the more quiet disposition, and not suffering a mental issue. You may have a slight social interaction issue, but sometimes that can be fixed by attending social events, dating, working a job involving human-to-human communication (cashier, phone operator), etc. Don't worry is the bottom line. Just practice sharing emotion with others through your voice like you would with your family.

Nervous for my son starting Kindergarten...?

We Answered:

My son is also shy around adults and wouldn't talk very much to his preschool teacher, so I had a little of the same anxiety about kindergarten too. The first time he was tested at school (kindergarten) he didn't respond well, because it was given orally by someone he didn't know. So, he was put in tutoring (which he needed anyway).
So, I would suggest calling the school and seeing if he could meet the teacher before school starts and also making some playdates with kids who will be in the same class. Explain your fears to the teacher so she can try especially hard to reach out to him at school. By the way, my son ended up loving his teacher and opening up to her. It was amazing! Don't worry too much, he may just be ready to break out of his shell this year.
