Speech Therapy Month

Juan Said:

19 month old and speech therapy?

We Answered:

Your son seems perfectly normal in his speech. At 19 months old he is still very young and his vocabulary of 15 words is very good. Now is the time to teach him colors and shapes. By repeating the colors often and everyday he will begin to grasp more words. Also he understands most things and knows your requests. Just relax and consider him very normal. Continue to work with him in a calm and soothing voice and let him babble his own words and he will learn more and more everyday.

Lost voice due tp problems with muscles in throat. Nine month wait for speech therapy.?

We Answered:

I am a licensed speech-language pathologist.
While I can't give you any specific exercises to work on without seeing you personally and knowing your medical history, my advice to you would be to try a different speech clinic, if possible. 9 months of therapy time lost is unreasonable for you to have to wait given the nature of your problem. There are some good vocal hygiene strategies that anyone can do which are typically helpful for voice problems due to vocal abuse (i.e., shouting, excessive talking, harsh throat clearing). Some of these would be to limit talking on the phone, make sure you are not talking to people from different rooms in the house, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, avoid caffienated products as these dehydrate the mucus membranes in your body and are harmful to the vocal folds. Make sure you are not pushing your voice to over-compensate for the hoarseness as this can cause even more difficulties with your vocal cords. It sounds like your vocal cords are not meeting and therefore, you have a gap between them from which air is getting through. Hence, you hear a whisper coming from you. There really aren't any homeopathic remedies for this from my profession's standpoint. The voice exercises will help your vocal cords strengthen and eventually meet at midline, thereby improving your vocal quality.

As far as the choking sensation goes, has your ENT been made aware of this? Is the choking in response to eating? Some times for people with vocal fold paralysis, they have difficulty swallowing. If this is the case, a swallowing evaluation would also be indicated. This can also be done by a speech-language pathologist. Good luck!

15 month old needing speech therapy? Speech delayed?

We Answered:

KEEP going to treatment! I am a Speech Pathologist, and it is very important for consistency to continue, even if just for a few months to see how he does. Remember that between 18 mos and two years you should see a huge language increase as well. If he isn't imitating you now, it is important to teach him this skill, with a trained professional.

Ask the therapist if one time per week would be okay, for you to learn some ideas. You can always increase to 2x/week if necessary (but only if her schedule allows). Or, stick with 2x/week for 3 months and see what changes he has made. Remember your SLP should have set some goals for him to achieve in a short period of time. If he is making good progress, she will let you know. Have faith in your therapist. So many times parents think I am "just playing with their kids", when in fact, I am playing...but doing so with a goal in mind, knowing when/how to cue to get what we want. Remember us therapists don't recommend therapy if it's not needed.

Other things to consider...how are his oral motor skills? Does he make eye contact? Does he try to imitate you? Lots of questions for your therapist.

Hope this helps you! Keep up the therapy, it will pay off in the end!!!!
:)

Taking 18 month old out of speech therapy?

We Answered:

All children develop differently, and there are children who talk later than others. I work in a daycare and see a lot of children that need/don't get speech therapy they need. I don't often see children getting speech therapy before age 3. If it is not working, I would say maybe wait until she is 3 and if she is still behind get her re-evaluated. In PA, children under 3 get any services (speech, etc) from Early Intervention, and once they turn 3 they get services from the Intermediate Unit (IU). Only you know what is best for your child. You sound like you are doing all of the right things and are pro-active in her development. Whatever you choose, I'm sure things will turn out fine.

speech therapy for 15 month old?

We Answered:

my son has speech apraxia and he was about 18 months when i realized something was wrong i kept thinking he would catch up or start talking. he might just be a late talker but if i was you i would start with the speech therapy now and start him in early intervention as soon as possible the younger they are the better. he might catch up but if he does have a delay you will be on top of things. good luck!

Daycare says I should put my 16 month old in speech therapy...?

We Answered:

Okay first off the average two year old only knows two hundred words, a 16 month old still has 8 months to get to that level. If this is your first child, I will tell you as a mom of three, you will be shocked to find once they really get going with the talking, they pick up words faster than you can believe.
Second my third was born "tongue tied" and I heard a few know it alls say he was going to need therapy or an operation, blah blah blah.
Well they were all wrong, hes right on schedule and talks up a storm without any lisping! Babies grow at their own pace and don't let know it alls try and push their stupidity on you. You're his mom and your instincts are good about your own kid! If you feel hes OK than he probably is, if you notice somethings off go to the pediatrician. Simple.
I live by the old saying, " Opinions are like a$$holes, every ones got one and most of them stink!"
