Speech Therapy Programs

Eric Said:

Has anyone used this home based speech therapy program?

We Answered:

This was discussed on one of my Yahoo groups and the consenus was that it was a waste of time/money.

If your child needs ST, and if you HS, then you should still be able to get ST from the school district. Or if your private insurance covers it, try that route.

Lloyd Said:

What are the prerequisites necessary to get into Waterloo University's speech program?

We Answered:

The program at the University of Waterloo is Speech Communication and not Speech Therapy. The Speech Communication website of the university tells the difference between Speech Communication and Speech Therapy.

"Speech Communication is a Humanities discipline that examines how people talk in everyday contexts: at work, at home, and in life. By contrast, Speech Therapy is a Science/ Medical discipline that studies the pathology of vocal production: what happens when an individual cannot produce sounds clearly, and what to do to improve the condition."

Make sure Speech Communication is what you want before applying and enrolling! For Speech Communication at Waterloo, you apply through Honours Arts. The requirement is a mid 70s average. You should aim slightly higher than that to be on the safe side and/or if you want to be in the co-op program.

The course requirements (for Ontario Secondary School applicants) are listed on the website. Basically you will need Grade 12U English (at least 70%) and 5 additional Grade 12 U or M courses. If you are applying from out of province, check the website for your requirements.

Are Psychology and Health Science each good majors for getting into a speech therapy grad program?

We Answered:

You can get into a grad program with another major but you will have to spend extra time doing the prerequisite courses. With an undergrad major in communication disorders you will spend about 5 semesters to get your masters. Without it you will spend about 8 semesters. Make sure your master's program is ASHA accredited. Check www.asha.org for accredited programs.

Samuel Said:

Should I continue speech therapy for my son?

We Answered:

Please DO NOT stop therapy/monthly monitoring unless the speech pathologist determines he is ready to stop. The speech "teacher" is not qualified to make the determination of readiness for discharge, nor are the professionally unqualified answerers on YA. Either tell the person who comes to your home that you'd like your son to be evaluated by the speech pathologist to see if your son is ready for discharge, or call the school district. If you stop prior to the recommended time, your son will most likely be denied any needed services in the future due to parental non-compliance.
