Speech Therapy Swallowing

Edwin Said:

where can i find funding for speech therapy?

We Answered:

You might want to try contacting ASHA (American Speech Language Hearing Association) - the national organization of SLPs in the US. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Their website is http://www.asha.org
Here is ASHA's number: (800) 638-8255

Perhaps your husband can also look into qualifying for SSI or public aid or some other assistance program.
http://www.ssa.gov/ssi/ provides some information on Medicare, social security disability, etc. so that may be a good resource.

Social workers are usually pretty knowledgeable about what resources are available, so you may want to try contacting the staff social worker at the hospital your husband goes to as well.

Best of luck

Anyone familiar with speech problems in children having to do with thrusting their tongue when swallowing?

We Answered:

. I would get a few more opionis before they put anything in her mouth. that she may not need and is expensive. My middle daughter was a tongue thruster. she did not need any apparatus. or dental intervention. although she had braces to straighten her teeth. she had speech therapy at school from 1st grade to 5th grade. She talks prefect now. and you would never know she had a problem

What to expect at speech pathologist evaluation with 9-month-old?

We Answered:

At 9 months most of the evaluations will consist of the therapist looking at the physical structure of his mouth, teeth, gums, tongue, etc, observing him as he plays, and asking you lot of questions.

As he is not babbling at all you may need to take him to an audiologist who works with infants to have a specific type of hearing screening done. It consists of them measuring what sound is reaching your son's brain. (I am just assuming that you haven't already had this done.)

If it turns out that your son is deaf or has autism or is just severely delayed, than getting that diagnosis this early is crucial because it will allow for very intensive therapy for him while his brain is still very plastic.

I am not sure what therpy would look like for a 9 month old child but I imagine it will be a more intensive and targeted version of what you are already doing-talking, singing, reading and interacting as much as possible with your child. The therapist will probably spend a lot of time teaching you what to do for your child at home.

I wish you the best of luck with your child. Although I don't work with infants, I do teahc special education and have 4 years of experiance with preschool children who are delayed. Please dont' hesitate to e-mail me if you have any more questions.

Should I sign up for Speech Therapy? - People have difficulty understanding me when I speak, ?

We Answered:

Sounds like for one you can talk a little fast and you need to slow down so people can understand you. I would go to the dr's and speak to him about the saliva build up in you mouth and tell him about your concerns I would guess you will be referred to see a Specialist about it first and they will be able to give you a clearer picture of whats happening. and how it can be corrected. Don't get all upset or worried this is common I had the same problem and it cleared as I got older. but for the time being just slow down a little so people can understand you a little bit better. Would also suggest you speak to your teachers so te understand you problems. Everything will be confidential so you don't have to worry about your mates or other pupils finding out.

Bertha Said:

Are any German speaking Speech Therapists (or students/academia) practicing in the U.S.?

We Answered:

ASHA.org is the site for the American Speech Language Hearing Association. There is a clinician locator link which can be searched by the languages spoken by the clinician.
Your fiance could possibly contact whomever there is on the ASHA list that speaks German.

Discuss It!
