My uncles who stuttered said that they stuttered worse when they tried NOT to stutter, when they were under stress, and when they were very tired. Try concentrating on what you are saying rather than how you are talking, eliminating as much stress from your life as you can, getting plenty of rest, plus working on your speech using a therapist, the self therapy book, or watching The Stuttering Foundation’s videos and using the things you learn every day.

Audrey Said:

I have a stutter and its made my life a misery, please help.?

We Answered:

I'm sorry about your stuttering & the other difficulties you are having. I'm a speech therapist and I'm continually trying to find ways to better treat and reach my clients who stutter.

I just answered this question from another user (so I'm going to repeat myself a little bit).

In my training I was taught to teach people who stutter to talk more slowly. The rationale behind that is that talking slowly releases the tension that you feel when you stutter. The increasing tension can make a stutter worse. By releasing the tension, you can get through a moment of stuttering more easily.

I think you should also make eye contact with people when you are talking to them. Hard to believe, but it will help you get through a stutter.

Another thing you can try is to "connect" your sounds from word-to-word (I think this is hard to describe without an actual model). That helps you go from one word to the next.

Reading poetry (which has natural rhythm) and singing facilitate fluency, but those are only temporary fixes. You need solid techniques to manage your stuttering on a daily basis.

I think you need more speech therapy. Talk to someone at your school about getting you additional sessions. Or you could find a speech pathologist outside of school who runs their own practice.

Judy Said:

Can proclaim myself legally mute?

We Answered:

Louis, you can proclaim whatever you like. Free speech and all. Proclaim yourself in total surrender, or proclaim yourself a donkey. It won't do much.

If you take courage, maybe you can beat your problem. If you give up, and only if you give up, will you have to live with your problem the rest of your life.

Here's a little secret, though: No one minds much if you stutter. Teenagers are incredibly mean, but now that you're entering the adult world, you will find that people are more patient and understanding. Once you realize that no one really cares that much that you stutter, you will find more confidence, and your problem will start to get better.

If you surrender, it won't.
