Speech Therapy Techniques

Speech therapy techniques?

We Answered:

Bouncing
This is when a word is repeated, nice and easy:
“like like like like this.”

Sliding
a technique for focusing on the first letter in a word by easing into it. Therapists and clients do this intentionally. "Wwwwwwwhy did you take ttttttttttrombone lessons?" The letter is not repeated (that would look like t, t, t, t, t, t, trombone), it is held for longer than necessary to make the point that the speaker is aware and in control.

Easy Onset
This is when sentences are started a little slower and with less tightness in the muscles—almost like gliding into the sentence.

Light Contact
This pertains to the degree of pressure between the lips, tongue and teeth. The lighter the "contact" between these elements, the lessening of the stutter.

Speech Therapy????

We Answered:

My daughter was born with a cleft palate and has had speech therapy since she was a few months old - at first it was just muscle stimulation but evolved into sounds/words as she got older - she is turning 8 shortly.

If you can try to find "Sound Articulation" information. Where this is really useful is it using hand signals to remind them of the sound, and additionally the signals are relevant to the sound they are trying to make.

Start off with a "sound" book and do each letter of the alphabet on at a time - stay on the one sound until she can do it. Speech therapy is a long term thing - you can expect it to be quick.

Once she can do all single sounds, start with cluster sounds - ie. SH words - in her "Sound book" do activities that start with the SH words (or whatever you are doing) - so you could cut out pictures from magazines etc.

There are certain sound clusters that you should do together, ie. K & C are done together, SH & TH are done together etc.

Email me as you go and I can go through my daughter's "Sound Book" and take you through it.

Hope this helps.

should i consider speech therapy for my three year old?

We Answered:

Speech therapy will not make your child less whiney and spoiled.
IT seems like you need to be consistent and firm in your life with your daughter.
I thinkyou are right that Grnadma has spoiled her.
But it isn't too late to help her be a happy, talking , little girl who learns that you don't get what you want by whining.
It will be hard for you, but your home life is different that Grandma's home and children can deal with it .

Looking for DVD on speech therapy for people with Muscle Tension Dysphonia?

We Answered:

There are none for the simple reason that non-professionals should not be doing their own therapy.
Get a referral to a speech pathologist from your ENT. That is the person who should direct the intervention based on numerous factors which require skilled assistance.
