Speech Therapy Toddlers

Paula Said:

Question about speech therapy for a toddler?

We Answered:

My son was a slow talker. At approx. 22 months we talked to his doctor and decided to set him up with a speech therapist. When we finally came up on the list for testing a month later we were told he was doing very well. That while he was not talking he had no problem sounding out hard letters. She didn't recommend that we continue with the therapy, but instead gave us some advice and papers with instructions on how to help him along. The information she gave us turned out to do the trick.

We picked up some flash cards with pictures of things on them. I started talking to him more often about EVERYTHING. Like if we were out for a walk I would talk to him about what we came across. For example "look at the big dog" or "that is a pretty flower". Talking to him really helped him come out of his shell. When he did start talking we wouldn't correct him. If he said "big tree" we would say "yes, that is a big tree" and show him how to expand his words. Basically we just guided him and it came naturally. He was talking a lot more by the time he was 2 1/2.

The reason we brought him to the doctor initially because all the kids around him at his age seemed to be talking like pros. I was worried that he was falling behind on his speech. The doctor was not worried at all but said if it would make us feel better she would set us up with the speech therapist. Everything worked out well in the end however. Some kids are just slower talkers than others. =)
