Speech delay/ Mutism? Please Help.?

We Answered:

To be honest it is completely normal. I wouldn't worry about it. You may be concerned, but I would leave it up to the pediatrician to make the call. He will have a visit when he turns 2, and during that visit the dr will notice something is up. The dr then will suggest speech therapy and set up a course of action with the parents. I wouldn't say the child is mute because he says mama and makes noise, a mute is well mute. A lot of children have a sensory problem and don't like the way the vibrations feel on their tongue when they talk so they don't talk. He will need speech therapy and occupational therapy if that is the case. He will be fine none the less and I wouldn't cause unnecessary worry for his parents. Let the dr do the worrying for you,

Has anyone ever heard of Headstart? If looking to donate, why not look into Headstart?

We Answered:

I would agree. My mother used to work as a dietician at a local Headstart.

Definitely a worthwhile organization to donate charitable funds!

3 year old with speech delay.... HELP!?

We Answered:

You are at the therapy session? My two children received speech therapy at the public school at age 3 and I was never in attendance. Maybe he would be more attentive to the speech therapist if you were not there. You don't mean to be, obviously, but perhaps by being there you are a distraction.

Has the school expressed concern regarding his behavior or concern regarding developmental delays? I would request further testing to see if there are any other issues involved with him, other than speech.

Have you had his hearing tested?

19 month old expressive speech delay?

We Answered:

My son is 20 months old and just qualified for speech therapy with our states early intervention program. My son can say mama, dada, and whoo. Like your son, he understands everything and will follow instructions or commands. We have done two weeks of therapy so far and we don't have any new words yet. We have learned a few signs which my son has begun using and it's helpful. Like everyone below said....I think all babies develop at their own pace. I figure early intervention can't hurt and because it's free and they come to your house once a week we will take advantage of it. I hope your son starts speaking very soon...and hope mine gets some new words too! I am also a stay at home mom and my son isn't around a lot of children at day care. So hopefully they will both catch up soon!
