Speech Therapy Training

Dana Said:

i am a nursery nurse and am interested in speech therapy what is involved?

We Answered:

This is on the BBC web site.

www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onelife/education…

And the NHS has the below site that tells you a little about all of the careers available.

http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Def…
At the bottom is a link to NHS jobs, so you could look at what the various grades get paid and where there may be work near you.

Job interview for makaton speech and language therapy assistant?

We Answered:

I think they would be more interested in you as opposed to Makaton, our speech therapist get the signs wrong all the time but is BRILLIANT with our autistic son, read up about makaton anyway to show willing ie it's history and why the signs are like they are eg thumbs up for ok and wave for hello etc making them easier to learn. We have just started learning as our son is non verbal and are finding it easy to pick up. Good luck.

How can I help my son to begin potty training even though he can't speak?

We Answered:

Hi! I am in the same boat as you, though my son is a bit younger. Hunter is 21 months and is not speaking; he is also in speech therapy. He also watches daddy go potty and is very curious. About a month ago he starting walking up to the toilet and trying to pull his pants down, so I would take his pants and diaper off and hold him up, but he never would go. Then, about a week ago, he had this terrible diaper rash, so I was letting him run around naked to air it out, and after about an hour, he hadn't gone potty, so I thought it was the perfect time to try again, and wouldn't you believe it?! He peed in the potty!! I was so excited it brought me to tears!

Since then, I let him run around in training pants. Mind you, we still have lots of accidents, but what we do is put him in his training pants and set the timer on the microwave to go off every hour. Everytime it beeps, we try to potty. It is a great system and he is using the potty pretty regularly. He knows it is time to try when the beeping starts!

Good luck!

Potty training toddler with speech delay?

We Answered:

My 7 year old was speech delayed at that age, and I currently have a 28 month old who is in speech therapy. It sounds like he is not quite ready to be potty trained. It's ok to start practicing, but don't get discouraged if he's not catching on. With my first, we started at 26 months, nothing. I tried again about 5 months later. OK, but not getting it yet. I tried again when she turned 3 and she did great. Right now my 2 year old will sometimes come up to me and hold her diaper and gibber gabber something. Or if I ask her if her diaper is wet, she will grab down there and gibber something. She'll sit on the potty, but doesn't really want to. She's woken up dry in the morning, but still nothing comes out in the potty. So, I'm not pushing it. I'm not consistent on the potty training, just here and there. In a few months, I will try again, but I have a feeling it will be closer to when she's 3.

Also, potty training has nothing to do with whether they can talk or not. For this age, you have to take your child to the potty, or remind him constantly to go to the potty. They can't go to the potty by themselves yet (most kids). It's not until closer to 3 or even 4 yrs., when they just go by themselves without telling you. Right now, they need help.

Is speech therapy taking away personality?

We Answered:

I agree i used to have a fairly bad lisp and i grew out of it. cumon if its not noticeable and the only person to pick up on it was a school nurse who is trained in this sort if stuff. Besides the benefits he would bring to her would be amazing for her. But do monitor his Speech just in case it goes down hill. If he gets worse or he says how he does not like how he lisps then take him to see someone out of school not the school nurse because getting taken out of lessons for his speech when he is older he will be embarrassed in front of his mates.

Dawn Said:

potty training for my speech delayed son?

We Answered:

First you want to focus on working with him on potty training then once he begins going consistently and hopefully by that time he will be able to communicate with you sufficiently enough to let you know he needs to go potty.

My nephew has a severe speech delay although he has improved significantly in the last year. My parents worked with him at about age 3. They were consistently taking him to the potty while my step dad worked with him to help his speech.

Also showing him pictures similar to what one would use for a hearing impaired child can help as well.
