motor speech disorder?

We Answered:

Unless there has been neurological damage, it is probably not dysarthria. Apraxia of speech would be a more likely possibility. Check out www.apraxia-kids.org. They have great info on the disorder. If that is what it is, talk to your speech therapist to get things to practice at home. Consistent daily practice is important in improving his speech.

My 2 year old son is not saying words yet?He will say mama, dada, but that's it. He will start speech therapy

We Answered:

Okay this happend to my sister! This is what my parents did..and it helped a lot!!

1.Buy flashcards

2.get a magazine

3. Get glue

4. Get sizzors

Cut out easy simple pictures from your magazine like apple, cheese, horse etc. and glue it to the flashcards..and ask your child what the animal is..and keep on practicing with ;your child as much as possible! It helps..or you can buy flash cards from the dollar store, walmart etc. IF you want to buy the flash cards i would suggest for you to go to the Dollar Store because they cost like one dollar. And add a new card every week! It helped my sister a lot! I hope i helped =D

How do speech therapists help?

We Answered:

Parallel play if he is under 2 1/2, imaginative play if he's going on 3.
For example, if he is under 2 1/2 or so and likes cars, you play with one, and he plays with one. Make car noises, talk about your car, but don't try to engage him; he's not developmentally ready. You can use animals and make their noises, and talk about them too, Likewise, other transportation (bus, train, airplane, firetruck, police car).
Once he develops interactive play, you can engage him in playing out scenarios. The car going to the gas station, the car wash, etc. Animals living on thre farm-- you be the farmer, he's the animals (complete with noises). Fisher-Price makes great garage and farm toy sets.
Read to him, too, and use age-appropriate books. Richard Scarry ("Cars and Trucks and Things that Go"), and Dr. Seuss (particularly "Hop on Pop" and "Green Eggs and Ham" because of the rhyming).
Once he is evaluated, I'm sure the speech pathologist will suggest the right activities for his language age.

Can a person have a Free laptop with speech therapy

We Answered:

First of all I need to provide a little bit of education. Speech and language therapy is what a individual receives when they have a type of communication disorder. Speech therapy is not a disability BUT articulation, language, voice, and fluency disorders are types of speech and language disorders. If this child is receiving therapy, is he getting it through a private clinic or public school? Why is he receiving therapy? Is he nonverbal or difficult to understand? If he is in public school and is having trouble verbally expressing messages, then he could get an Alternative and Augmentative Communication evaluation through the local school district's Assistive Technology Team. They can provide a voice output device (similar to a computer) that will help this young man express his thoughts, needs, and wants. If you are actually wanting a computer to help him learn vocabulary, grammar, concepts, and critical thinking skills you could purchase a refurbished/used laptop from Dell, Apple, or other local computer retail dealer. If this child has other disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, etc... then you may be able to get some assistance through Medicaid (if the child has Medicaid) or through your state's Assistive Technology program. The child will still have to have some type of evaluation by a Speech/Language Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist to determine what kind of technology would best meet his needs. This would be an outside AAC or AT evaluation (or done as a school evaluation if he is in school). There are plenty of funding resources but you will have to have a medical diagnosis and the AAC/AT evaluation in order to qualify for the funding. Each state is different. You may e-mail me if you have further questions.
