Types Of Speech Therapy

Felicia Said:

What type of equipment is used in Speech Therapy?

We Answered:

Depends on the age of the patient, the severity of speech problem, other physical, mental problems. There are too many variables to answer this questions easily or accurately.

My daughter had tooth brushes, pop cycle sticks, mirrors, pieces of different shaped rubber, gum, candy, balloon(to make the oo sound(blowing it)etc...
The therapist used many different kinds of things for the different sounds. The different shapes helped shape her mouth for the sounds.

Becky Said:

What type of speech disorder is this?

We Answered:

Sounds like something on the Autism Spectrum or perhaps Child Disintegrative Disorder. You can have an ASD and be perfectly "normal." Other mild dymptoms include sloppy handwriting, sensory issues like sound or light sensitivity, being a very picky eater, OCD-like symptoms, having to conciously work hard to make friends or fit in in social situations, having a very strong interest in something (for my son, it is scorpions)

Russell Said:

What types of area do speech and language therapists work in?

We Answered:

education service does do a lot of work with speech and language therapists, however so do social services.
Get in touch with your local council and they would be able to advice you on.
You also have the hearing centre in hospitals who help people of all ages, it could be deafness in children helping them get language skills or it could be working with people after a stroke and assisting them to get the most out of language.
There are a lot of things you can apply slt to.
Council would let you know on what they offer, education department through your local council, local hospitals and health visitor clinics can give you further advise.
it all depends on where you wish to apply your skills once you have finished.
good luck
