Miriam Said:

We Answered:

Its best to major as an undergrad in speech pathology.

Erika Said:

Can I get a masters degree in speech pathology with a bachelors in communications?

We Answered:

You sure can, but you would have to take what they call "leveling" courses which are basically prerequisites that will give you a background in communication disorders and sciences or speech, language and hearing sciences (these are what most speech-language pathology undergrad programs are called, depending on the school). You would have to look into the schools that interest you to see if they have the option of taking these leveling courses if you have a bachelors in another field because some do and some don't. Some programs will let you enroll as a non-degree seeking student and complete the leveling courses, which will probably take 2 semesters, before applying to a graduate speech-language pathology program. Other schools will allow you to enroll as an undergraduate in a communication disorders and sciences or speech, language and hearing sciences bachelors program, which will take 4 semesters to complete the appropriate courses needed for whichever degree they offer. Check out this website and look for schools in your state or wherever you are looking to see if they have SLP programs: http://facstaff.uww.edu/bradleys/cdprograms.html

Duane Said:

Would like to apply for Speech Pathology master's program but have different degree.?

We Answered:

If you contact the department, they will be able to set you up with all of the requirements. Basically, you will be enrolled as a Masters student, but there are several undergrad classes that you will have to take (ie: articulation, stuttering, etc). So instead of the Master's program taking you two years, it will likely take at least 3. Contact your specific university for their requirements.

As far as being accepted into the program, anything you can do to be around people with speech or language impairments would be desirable. If you are interested in working in the speech field while you obtain your grad degree, I recommend looking for a traumatic brain injury facility in your area. I worked for one for 3 years while I obtained my degree, and I gained a ton of real-life experience with one population that is serviced by SLP's. My facility trained staff to work as direct caregivers for the clients in the facility. It was a great experience!

Eduardo Said:

What is your experience with speech pathology or communication disorder?

We Answered:

my son has autism, and would NOT talk. Now 5 years later, he's fine, but it was the speech therapist that had one of the toughest jobs, I thought. Once my child got into the program, he was talking in 6 months. This was the person that got my son to TALK. What a gift !
