Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Greg Said:

when will i be able to move or bend my knee? i just recently took off my cast from arthroscopic knee surgery?

We Answered:

That's a long time for the joint to be immobile. You'll have lost a LOT of muscle to atrophy. It's unlikely that they'd have taken the cast off if you weren't supposed to be trying to move it. It's just going to take time. Go slow, bending it a little bit more each day. Depending on what exactly they were doing through the scope, you may have scar tissue built up that has to be loosened up. It would probably be a good idea for you to work with a physical therapist to try to get your flexibility and strength back. It's going to be a long, difficult, and likely painful process.

Arthroscopic knee surgery on BOTH knees?

We Answered:

Both knees at the same time is unusual but not unheard of. Even with bilateral arthroscopy the procedure will be outpatient. After almost all arthroscopic procedures the patient is WBAT (weight bearing as tolerated) which means it may hurt to put weight on the legs but will do no harm. I have been involved in cases like this many times. You may want to consider renting a wheelchair for any trips outside your home. The procedure itself varies depending on what is done but ranges from 15-45 minutes per knee.

Going Back to school after arthroscopic knee surgery?

We Answered:

I wouldn't recommend it because you may still feel some of the effects of the medicine given for the anesthesia process for surgery especially if they use general anesthesia during the surgery. I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

I wish you the best with your surgery.

What do I wear after knee arthroscopic surgery?

We Answered:

Hello Ashley,

I would recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing. Your knee is likely to feel sore and be swollen for at least a week. For the first 24-48 hours ice your knee as directed. Rest and elevate your knee as much as possible - your knee should be elevated higher than your heart. To answer your question, skinny jeans would not be the most comfortable post surgery!

What should I expect with arthroscopic knee surgery?

We Answered:

I have had arthroscopic knee surgery three time, the most recent being only 17 days ago. Sure, you'll have pain, but it's the worst the first two or three days after surgery. That's why you have pain killers.

Usually before the surgery, you can't have anything to eat 12 hours prior to the procedure, and NOTHING to drink 8 hourse before. YOu will check in to the hospital, and after you change n' stuff, they'll hook you up to an IV, and then you get the fun part of waiting...yay. They'll take you back to the Pre-op area (which is RIGHT before you go in to the O.R) That's when your surgeon will come and talk to you, and so will the anasthesiologist. It's important to communicate any concerns or fears you may have.

Most of the time going under anasthesia isn't that bad, you kinda get high (believe me, you can feel it), and then you drift off, and the next thing you know, you're waking up and being taken to the Recovery Room where you'll spend an hour or so. Most of the time they will NOT keep you over night for an arthroscopic knee surgery. You can ask for pain meds, (and do, you'll be glad you did). Then you'll get sent home, and make sure you have some one at home with you for the first 24 hours after anasthesia. (You'll be surprised how hard it is to do some of the simpelist things, trust me!)

Don't stress, it's honestly no big deal. Try to be as calm as you can, it makes things a whole lot easier. Good luck! Hope this helped you!
