Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery

Sharon Said:

Can anyone tell me about the recuperating time after carpal tunnel syndrome surgery.?

We Answered:

I suppose it depends...i had it done on my right hand, then my left 2 months later. Both times i returned to work 3 days later. Not by choice,we had to eat,but i did fine.Unless you have very small wrists, they go in at the palm of your hand,at the lifeline...maybe that made a difference with my recovery also.
However, carpal tunnel was not the only problem. I have thoracic outlet syndrome...I can't seem to find a doc to help me.
It has become very painful. Most of the symptoms feel the same, only my hands don't stay numb and tingly, they BURN.it extends to the neck and shoulders and causes migraines and a lot of misery.....If there are any questions about your nerve conduction studies or other tests you may have had done ,you may want to mention thoracic outlet to your doctor.Physical therapy can help a lot if it doesn't get too advanced.
Good Luck with surgery...It will be worth it in my opinion. It did fix my CT :)

Glenn Said:

If someone has carpal tunnel syndrome, would that person necessarily have to have surgery?

We Answered:

You do not have to have surgery at any time for any thing. You can change how you use your hands which will allow your wrists to heal and sometimes, the symptoms go away. Wearing a brace also helps the healing process as does ibuprofen on a regular basis. Tendonitis often is just pain, carpal tunnel sometimes is accompanied by swelling in the wrist and hand but without a doctor looking and feeling the tendons, it would be very difficult to differentiate. Carpal tunnel surgery is only a small incision but unless you stop the repetitive movement that caused the problem in the first place, it can come right back.

Questions to anyone who had surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome?

We Answered:

I had my surgery, performed laproscopically, a few years ago.
I couldn't use my hand at all for 2 weeks, it was in a sling, and it was still in a bandage and sore for another 4 to 6 weeks after that. But nothing too bad in the way of pain, I just have to use my hands for work and couldn't.

The surgery was no where near as bad as I thought would be and glad I had it done. It was worth all the inconvienance caused.
I had my mum nursing me for a change. I did not make a very good patient apparently!

Go and get it done it's a relief.

Antonio Said:

can i use my hands properly after carpal tunnel syndrome surgery?

We Answered:

I had mine done through key hole surgery and I could not use my hand for 2 full weeks at all. It was still sore and bandaged up for 6 weeks afterwards which I was warned about before.
You will not be ble to have any use of your hand for the first 4 days, until the first Doctor's visit. It is so tightly bandaged up it looks like a boxing glove.
So now getting this dressing wet. No shower or shower with a well fitted, taped up bag over it. You will need someone to help with the shower.
After that it's just a matter of getting over the pain and stiffness. But they discourage you from using it, only using it minimally, for as long as you can.
Are they doing both your hands at one? that's just not heard of anymore because of the reasons I have explained above. Usually they do one hand wait 6 weeks then the other. But not both. How do they expect you to clean yourself? Eat? Wipe after the toilet? Dress? Etc
If they are doing two at once have they explained this? And organised some home help?
E-mail me if you have any further questions.

We Answered:

My friend had it done and says it was the best decision she ever made in her life. Her symptoms have totally disappeared, and her recovery was easy and took only a week or two.
