What she needs is restorative plastic surgery, which SHOULD be covered by her regular medical insurance.

Cosmetic surgery is different, but not medically necessary,

Erin Said:

Where can I find insurance covered cosmetic surgery after extreme weight loss?

We Answered:

Sadly that probably won't be covered by insurance.

Congrats on the weight loss (how did you do it and how long did it take?)!

Stephen Said:

Health insurance pay for post weight loss cosmetic surgery?

We Answered:

It is really dependant on the company. Mine won't but perhaps yours will. Also if the weight loss was due to surgery based on medical assessment (ie high cholesterol etc) then that is a plus.

Insurance for cosmetic surgery?

We Answered:

You won't find one insurance company that will cover anything that is not medically necessary.
Insurance is based on 'no-loss, no-gain' provisions and is for people who need it (ill-health, burn-victim, accidents, etc.).

Insurance is not for people who just want to change who they are because they don't like themselves.

In addition, if you do have cosmetic surgery and there are complications that arise from it, you would likely be declined short-term disability benefits if you missed work, as well.

Christian Said:

Is cosmetic surgery covered by health insurance?

We Answered:

Most times cosmectic procedures are considered an elective surgery or not medically necessary, meaning that you as the patient have chosen to have it versus your doctor requiring that you have it.

Your insurer may cover it if your doctor requires it for health reasons such as gastric bypass if you are significantly obese or reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy.

If you do not have a health condition, then you will have to finance the elective surgery yourself. Your policy will have a section on "Exclusions and Limitations" which list procedures not covered by the insurer.

If you are in the process of selecting a policy, you should be able to get a sample before you purchase which you can then review and see what may not be covered.
