Pros and Cons of a Double Knee Replacements?

We Answered:

A friend of mine had a double knee replacement last year. She says she's glad she had both done at the same time or else she would never have gotten the second knee done. The rehab was painful. A year later one knee is in excellent shape , but the other one still bothers her, though a lot less than before the surgery. Her advice is to do water aerobics before and as soon after the surgery as possible. It helps to strengthen muscles without the joint stress associated with regular floor exercises.

Gwendolyn Said:

what is in the tylenol for high level of pain after knee surgery ?

We Answered:

If they ordered tylenol for you it probably has codeine in it. There is Tylenol with codeine and it is either Tylenol #2,3 or 4. The pain meds they use with hydrocodone and similar drugs are Vicoden and Percocet. So there is a whole line of them. Usually you heal better if you have no pain or manageable pain. If the hydrocodone bothers you they can always switch it to something that will not bother you. I'd ask about going to plain Tylenol. It is not the best pain reliever in the world. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and works better but you need permission to use it because it also thins the blood like aspirin. I am a little nervous that if you give up your pain meds you will not do as well in physical therapy. So I'd consider that. Physical therapy is essential to you now.

Replacement Knee Surgery?

We Answered:

I don't know about having both knees done at once. My wife had one knee done and the other done ten months later. After the first knee she was back at work in a month and after the second only three weeks. The pain after wards, excluding the first ten days or so, is nothing compared to the previous walking around grinding bone on bone pain. She says if she had known how much better she would feel she would have had the surgery done much sooner. We did have the advantage of an RN in the family to help with aftercare for a few days and my wife was highly motivated. Any good hospital will keep your pain to a minimum after wards as long as you are doing your physical therapy and not just laying around. She had the Depuy brand knee appliances implanted and is very happy with them and the results.
