Ear cropping should only be done by a board certified surgeons.
These surgeries are challanging and painful. Only doctors who are qualified should be preforming the elective surgery.
This surgery should cost you 1000-3000 dollars.
Any less then that I can assure you the pet is not recieving the amount of care/pain management necessary.
This surgery causes unnecessary pain that a young animal is not physically prepared for.
Many surgeons will not even preform ear croppings because of the pain associated with it.

I got this procedure done when I was 14 (I am now almost 21). My mum waited until I was old enough to make the decision myself, as I was getting badly bullied on and couldn't face myself. It was a really horrible time in my life, I was really depressed. As I am in Scotland, I got it done on the NHS (for free).

The pain for me was minimal, although I think I have a really high pain threshold. Basically, I went in for the op which was really quick, came around and my head felt really heavy. I was woozy from the anaesthetic so the only slight pain I felt was a little twinging around my ears (nothing bad). I had to wear this big turban-like bandage on my head for a few weeks, so I got it done during the summer - nobody at school would notice that way. Once I got the bandages off and the stitches out (which was sore, but again bearable), it was the strangest experience. I cried a little as it made such a huge difference to me, and I knew I would never be picked on about it again. For a few months after that I had to wear bandages around my head at night, and moisturise the scars so they would fade better and then that was it. I celebrated by getting my ears pierced, I was so excited to show them off and it gave me the biggest boost of confidence I have ever had. It was life changing.

Your doctor will examine you to see if you can get the operation done and what happened to me was that I was put on a waiting list. they could probably advise you on costs etc. It took a year, so if you really want it done i suggest you start sorting it all out now.

After I went back to school nobody knew I'd had it done except my close friends, and the bullies had forgotten that I had big sticky out ears. It was never ever mentioned again. Nobody has once called me stupid or vain, because it wasn't a vanity issue. I got it done because psychologically I was suffering badly and I had zero self confidence.

VektramD: The are no negative side effects, they do not take bits out of your ears, they burn the cartilage and re-shape it. That is all. It does not affect hearing and your ears are fully grown by now. There is no effect on growth and pain was minimal.

I can't tell you how much your vet bill will be, but I recommend you talk to your vet, tell them your financial limitations and see if there is a way they can cut some costs or help you find some assistance. Some vet's will take payments. There is a program called Care Credit I have heard of to help with vet bills.

Most will give you a quote as has been mentioned. You want a range, maybe I can provide that. I worked at a clinic which had six different vets and they rotated through the surgery. Each had their own fee schedule. So this was a few years ago but they ranged from $150-$400 for that type of surgery. You particular quotes may vary.
