Foot Surgery For Bunions

Misty Said:

is it bad to fly after foot surgery and your foot is still swollen?

We Answered:

If you cannot wear a shoe because of the surgery, air travel could be a problem. (a) Someone could accidentally step on your foot, such as a security guard. (b) Your toe could get caught in the escalator. (c) A flight attendant could run over your foot with the food cart. (d) Someone who didn't like your looks could intentionally stomp on your foot.

Bryan Said:

Has anyone every had foot surgery for bunion removal?

We Answered:

I had the surgery on both feet at once. And, recovery really wasn't that bad. You don't have to be totally off your feel for 2 weeks. However, the more you stay off your feet, the quicker and better you will heal. Full recovery did take almost 2 months. And, I still had to take it easy after that. Just be careful and follow the doctors orders exactly so that you can heal as quickly as possible. If you can, have someone at home to help you while you are recovering.

I want to get foot surgery....?

We Answered:

I had bunion surgery in early December 2007 and I am glad I did. I have had bunions since I was teenager which I inherited from my father and grandmother who had terrible feet and problems walking in later life.

I was experiencing pain everyday and finding it almost impossible get shoes that would fit, so I decided to get my feet fixed now rather that let my feet and mobility decline further.

I didn't experience much pain, but there is certainly a lot of inconvenience with foot surgery.

After surgery my feet were in partial casts and bandages for six weeks. The day after surgery I was able to walk (albeit very tentatively) with "bunion booties" and crutches. The bunion booties force you to walk on the heals and sides of the feet to keep the pressure off the front of the foot.

After the first week I did not need the cruthes anymore. After six weeks the plaster casts came off. This was the most painfull part of the procedure for me as its was the first time in six weeks that I had put any sort of pressure on the front of my feet.

Its been six weeks since the plaster casts came off and I am walking very well in bare feet and soft soled shoes (Crocs have been a godsend) but my feet a still swell up and are very sensitive to tight or hard soled shoes and rough ground. The surgeon said it would take six month after surgery for the feet to return to normal.

As for price that will depend on your surgeon, hospital etc. locality and health insurance coverage. My out of pocket expenses were AUD$1500 for the lot - surgeon, xrays, drugs, hospital etc.

Ruth Said:

What can I do to lose weight when I had foot surgery?

We Answered:

Walk as much as you can, eat a healthy diet, and drink plenty of water. You really do not need to worry much about weight.

Audrey Said:

Is it normal to have persistent pain several years after foot surgery?

We Answered:

I don't think it is normal. If nothing was corrected then the surgery was a failure which usually means you need it again. Done properly this time.
