Hematoma After Surgery
Jon Said:
Anyone have a hematoma after surgery- how long did it take to heal? I had a c-section 3 weeks ago and have?We Answered:
My son had a huge hematoma around his incision. His was from getting a plate put on his femur. His incision kept bleeding, and wasn't healing. After 3 weeks and no improvement he had to go up to the hospital & meet with an Orthopedic Surgeon. The Dr. took his leg and squeezed the crap put of it. (Thought my son was going to take a swing at him) The blood was squirting out all over the floor. He then bandaged his thigh, put him on antibiodics, and told him to come back up the hospital the next morning. He told my son if it was still bleeding, that he would have to open his leg up and see what was happening inside. He thinks a blood vessel had been cut during the original surgery.
Luckily for him, the bleeding had slowed down, so no more surgery. Finally after about 3 days the bleeding had completely stopped.
I know he had to keep the stitches and staples in for another few weeks where the bleeding was. His incision was from up over his hip bone down to his knee, and it was just the top part that gave him trouble.
I hope that your Dr knows what's going on. Our family Dr was concerned enough to send us to the emergency Dr.

How do you care for a hematoma on the ear after surgery. Dr. said just use water to clean????We Answered:
The vet had a reason for saying nothing but water, even if he didn't explain it. If there are stitches, or he used surgical glue, then anything but water might cause a problem. If it starts to get infected, then take it to the vet, but otherwise it should be okay as long as you do as he said and clean it with water.
And most of all, do not, I repeat DO NOT, use peroxide like others have suggested, it would reopen the wound.
Good luck.

If i get a hematoma after hernia surgery? Can i sue?We Answered:
A hematoma is pooling of the blood under the skin, in most cases what you would call a bruise. Having surgery can result in bruising so unless the doctors made a mistake and caused serious damage I do not think you can sue them.Terry Said:

Do you think it's okay to sedate my dog for 2 weeks after hematoma surgery? We Answered:
You vet knows what is necessary to keep the hematoma from returning.Aural hematomas are painful. Sedating your pet will lessen the amount of discomfort the pet experiences throughout recovery.
Sedation will allow the ear to heal with less likelihood of re injuring.
Know that what your vet is doing make sense as he is a doctor of veterinary medicine.
Thomas Said:
how long does a hematoma after c-section surgery take to heal?We Answered:
That of course depends on the size of the hematoma. As long as they don't get infected, (many do,) the hematomas (more correctly hematomata for plural) go through a process of shrinkage from one week to six weeks.
If it is near the surface, it is easy, and not painful, to drain it. If it is near the uterus, that is more annoying.
