Hernia Repair Surgery

Steve Said:

When can I get back to exercise after laparoscopic hernia repair surgery? Will it be harmfull to exercise?

We Answered:

The benefit of laparoscopic surgery eliminates the need for a long recovery from a huge incision, however the tissues of your hernia repair will still need to heal as long as with the open-kind of surgery--that cannot be sped up.

Your surgeon would know just when you are ready to resume your normal exercise routine. He or she is the one who worked on you and we on the internet do not have the benefit of that information--your doctor is your best bet because everyone is different.

Melanie Said:

I had an inguinal hernia repair surgery last year, What exercises can i do to tone my stomach ..?

We Answered:

Check with your doctor first to make sure it is healed properly. Then start slow and easy, building up slowly. You want to build muscle gradually.
Live well and do good.

Roland Said:

Can I hear about experiences and recuperations of those who had adult umbilical hernia repair surgery?

We Answered:

I had my tubes tied the same time they did the umbilical hernia. It was laparoscopic for the tube tying, but since they went through the belly button to do that I don't think the hernia was...I was kind of out of it at that point so I don't know. I opted to be "awake"(heavily sedating cocktail given to me). I have a funkey T shaped scar coming out of my belly button that is about an inch big. The weirdest thing about it was they put me in a harness and basically suspended me from my arms and legs so gravity would pull down everything inside so intestines and things wouldn't get in the way. They then inflated my abdomen and did the surgery. The inflating makes room so they can move the camera and thing around to do the surgery. I'm not sure if they would suspend you though...I think that was just for the tube tying.

Corey Said:

should i wait 2 months for a inguinal hernia repair surgery or should i ask for the surgery sooner?

We Answered:

If it's that bad, I'd call their office tomorrow, mention that you are in pretty bad pain and a lot of times they'll get you in sooner. I was diagnosed with one 10 years ago but it healed up on it's own after a few weeks (wow it was painful at first though...got mine while moving some furniture...my doctor said give it a few weeks, and they could give me the name of a surgeon if I needed, but it healed up on its own). But in your case, I'd definitely call the office tomorrow...if they can't get you in within a few days, maybe call your first doctor and see if they can help you see another surgeon sooner. Not sure how your insurance works and everything, but a lot of surgeons are very busy can have long wait times for appointments but if you're sick enough and make a few phone calls, you can usually get seen sooner.

Veronica Said:

Is it normal to get consistent pain in my abdominal nearly a year after hernia repair surgery ?

We Answered:

Iv heard its normal to feel some pain while all the nerves in that area heal for months afterwards but also (if the pain is really bad) that the operation procedure may have to be carried out again, as the hernia has/is popping out again.

I was discussing this with a colleague only yesterday as he was in pain also & has made an appointment just to check everything is ok. Maybe you should do the same, at least it will put your mind at rest.

Good luck, take care, hope its just the healing process

Freddie Said:

What will happen to the plastic mesh they put in during inguinal hernia repair surgery?

We Answered:

Yes, it is permanent. As with any other procedure, you could have post-op pain and/or infection. No SPECIFIC complications from the mesh, per se, than any other implanted foreign body.

Luis Said:

How long does swelling last after having inguinal hernia repair surgery?

We Answered:

Good question, I suppose the answer lies in what type of surgery did you have?
Patch?
Laparoscopic?
Most of the time the expected recovery time is over a month.
