Knee Replacements Surgery

Emily Said:

Can a person have knee surgery without a general anesthetic?

We Answered:

A knee replacement cannot be done with a local anesthetic alone - this is very major surgery. A combination of sedatives and amnesiacs can sometimes be used - this is called conscious sedation. Under these conditions, the patient is actually awake, but unaware of anything. Doctors can agree to try this, but there's no guarantee that deeper sedation won't be needed if the patient continues to react to pain during the surgery.
