Knee Surgery Procedure

Benjamin Said:

My mom is having knee surgery for minuscus tear, should she go for the microfracture procedure?

We Answered:

Sally, the latest literature states that removal of these tears is not the way to go. You have to understand the anatomy to see why this doesn't work. The knee has a covering on it called cartilage and this is on the ends of the femur, the long bone in the thigh, and the tibia, the big bone in the lower beg or shin bone. This is a very slippery material and keeps the bones from rubbing. The cartilage on the tibia also has another material on it called the meniscus. There are two of them and their job is to help the femoral condyles, the knuckles at the end of the femur, to roll correctly. They sit right on top of the cartilage. When one tears a piece of the meniscus it allows exposure of the cartilage underneath. Now as long as the knee can function it is better to leave this in place than to take it out with the exception of the knee locking or the inability to bend it as in those cases the tear has developed a flap which is getting caught stopping the movement. But to take out the tear otherwise opens up the cartilage to premature erosion. This premature erosion leads to the necessity of having a total knee replacement which is costly in time, pain, and money. It is better to strengthen the legs and as the strength of the muscles increases the knee is better able to withstand the stresses that are placed upon it. If she is overweight loss the weight for it will definitely decrease the stress on the knee. The most important aspect of this is to get the legs as strong as they can be. See a physical therapist about this and if she has the procedure then she is going to see one anyway. Ask the doctor to hold off until after she has undergone some therapy to strengthen the leg prior to the procedure for it will make the outcome that much better for your mom.

Knee surgery?

We Answered:

Please also view my response in "severe knee pain?".

Before considering knee replacement surgery, know that there are many simple causes of knee, hip and other joint pain that can be corrected without surgery, meds or physical therapy.

Modern medicine treats our bodies as if it were a Toyota Corolla- if something's giving you a problem just unbolt it (surgery) and put in a new part. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies have done a great job of convincing people that our bodies simply do not have the ability to heal themselves and that we need the intervention of surgeons and drugs to fix everything.

I highly recommend a book written by Pete Egoscue, entitled, "Pain Free, A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain". I've used his methods in my own practice with great success. The elimination of joint or muscle pain is usually so simple it borders on the laughable, but it makes sense because it is congruent with the way our bodies were designed to work. Read it! If you apply the techniques I'm confident you won't need surgery or meds and your pain will be a thing of the past.

Was told I need knee surgery, which procedure is better microfracture or OATS procedure?

We Answered:

Consult with an orthopedic medical specialist to see which procedure is best for your condition.
Good luck.

Ana Said:

How long do you have to be in the hospital for a knee surgery?

We Answered:

That sounds like it hurt.......... actually I know it did cuz I've twisted one of my knees twice and was told if I twisted it again they'd have to do surgery on me. It took me like 8-10 wks to heal after that and my doctor told me it took so long cuz i had just stretched the ligaments outta place but if i had torn them it wouldn't have taken as long to heal so maybe 6-8 wks for u to heal and if ur lucky outpatient procedure..............
