Lower Back Surgery

Kurt Said:

Can I still become a fighter pilot if I had lower back surgery 5 years ago ?

We Answered:

The opportunity is there, but you would need to pass a flight physical and obtain a waiver. Also depending on how many pilots the service needs your surgery would probably be subject to the flight board's decision.

It doesn't mean that you can't become a pilot, but it could very well be that you may be offered a different aircraft

Sidney Said:

Why can lower back surgery cause you to go blind?

We Answered:

Lower Back surgery may cause Blindness because of the damage to the posterior optic nerve—likely caused by the heavy blood loss during the spine surgery.

Jamie Said:

what do you have to change about your life after lower back surgery?

We Answered:

I'm sorry that your leg is numb on the right side; sometimes I wish that my leg was numb because I actually have hypersensitivity in my leg which has caused me to have back surgery to go into the nerves and implant a Spinal Cord Stimulator to help with the pain in my leg. Water aerobic exercises is excellent for the back, and overall light exercises is good for people after they've had back surgery. There is probably some risk to arthritis after surgery, but I don't know of much you can do to prevent arthritis (trust me I would if I knew of anything because I'm 14, almost 15, and my doctors said that underneath my one kneecap that I have enough arthritis to look like a knee from a 40 year old).

Violet Said:

Can you join the military after having lower back surgery for a slipped disc?

We Answered:

not really SORRY

Salvador Said:

I had lower back surgery for a slipped disc almost a year ago, is it bad to start running on a regular basis?

We Answered:

go with the doctor's advice. however, you could maybe ask if you could do light running or brisk walking to exercise your body as exercise is a therapy done after surgery to get your body used to moving again.

Andrew Said:

What is the cost of lower back surgery?

We Answered:

Prior to having surgery- have your grandmother try conservative means to control or correct the problem.

Before having surgery, I would have your grandmother check out a chiropractor. Many times they can help control the pain by realigning the joints. It may be too serious for a chiropractor to help, but they will be able to tell you that.

I wish your grandmother the best

Cindy Said:

Hey, I'm getting lower back surgery, i was wondering if i will be in a wheelchair during the recovery period?

We Answered:

It completely depends on the specific surgery you have and the training/opinion of your surgeon. The only person who will be able to answer this for you is the surgeon himself.

It is perfectly possible, even likely, that you will not need a wheelchair at all for any of the recovery period because if the aim is to keep you up and mobile then that's what they tend to like to do from day one post-operation.

All back surgery carries a risk of complications though and if something goes wrong then you could need a wheelchair for a bit.
