Pectus Excavatum Surgery

Sheila Said:

Has anyone ever had a Pectus Excavatum surgery?

We Answered:

i looked that up on yahoo search and it seems like a very complicated surgery, if you are under 18 i would suggest going to one of the many "Childrens Memorial" hospitals, I know the one here in Chicago is one of the best, or you can go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. You can also call my doctor Dr. Sheldon Levine in Tinley Park, Illinois, he as seen many famous people while they were stopping in Chicago, from Mick Jagger to Madonna to Med Ryan etc. I just know that his walls in his office are covered with ALOT of signed pix. And, he was voted by the people and his peers for being chicagoland's #1 family practionar by the Sun Times and The Tribune for quite a few years.

his number is 708-429-7373

tell them that you live out of state and wanted a referral for a good surgeon for the surgery you need to have. and you were referred to Dr. Levine by one of his patients. i will email you my name so you have it just in case.

your email is not available....join my 360 page so you can leave me a message there with your email if you dont want to put it on here or email me at chicago_gurl_here@yahoo.com

How much does insurance cover for pectus excavatum surgery?

We Answered:

Unless the surgery is a medical necessity....health insurance will not pay for it. If it is covered, how much will depend on your health plan. Your best bet is to call you health insurance company.

Will bulking up affect a pectus excavatum surgery?

We Answered:

I had the nuss procedure for pectus excavatum about 8 months ago. I asked the doctor the same question. He did not discourage working out before the surgery (assuming you are not a body builder). It will probably be easier to heal if you are in better shape. They do cut into your sides, which may destroy some of the work that you have put into your muscles, but I do not think this will negatively affect the operation in any way.

How long is the recovery after having a Pectus excavatum surgery done?

We Answered:

Recovery time is 4-5 days in the hospital and at least 2-3 weeks at home. Recovery times vary significantly between individuals and with age especially(younger patients recover faster). It should be noted that the above mentioned times are a minimum usually and quite often people report taking 2-3x as long to get back to normal.

Cost is somewhere around 35,000 to 65,000 USD (usually). It is often covered by insurance in moderate and severe cases where pulmonary/cardiac function is often impaired.

I was nussed in 2005 at CHKD and while it was a pretty rough recovery, I am VERY happy with the results. My correction is certainly not perfect but it is a vast improvement both physiologically and cosmetically. The improvent is remarkable.
