Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Victoria Said:

I am having total shoulder replacement surgery next week. What is the pain like immediately following surgery,?

We Answered:

Probably not to bad, considering they usually keep you doped up, for several days..... the pain starts when you start physical therapy....

Chester Said:

Anyone had or know someone who has had shoulder replacement surgery?

We Answered:

have your primary care physician make the referral -this saves you time and guarantees the insurance will cover it.

How painful in Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

We Answered:

These are all questions to ask your orthopedic surgeon. The length of your hospital stay will depend on your health insurance, but it will probably only be a few days since you'll be able to walk. I've had major rotator cuff surgery on my shoulder and I spent weeks in a sling (night and day) afterwards. It wasn't painful, however, and neither was the physical therapy. A shoulder replacement, however, is more drastic surgey. But they'll give you pain meds afterwards and with time and therapy, your shoulder will hurt less and get better. (Without surgery, your painful shoulder is only going to get worse.) So talk to your doctor and make sure he specializes in shoulder surgeries. You want someone with a lot of experience in the surgery you need.

shoulder replacement surgery?

We Answered:

You didn't say how old you are and what treatments you had already tried. I will tell you that a shoulder replacement is very major surgery and much more complicated than a knee replacement. I have two relatives that have had either one or two shoulder replacements. Neither did well post surgery and both had as much pain afterwards as prior to the surgery. You might do better than they did if you follow your physical therapy regimen closely. If things go right you might be able to swim a little, but you will certainly not have the mobility found in a normal shoulder joint. good luck with your decision
