Spinal Cord Surgery
Leslie Said:
Does spinal cord untethering surgery work in adulthood? We Answered:
The quick answer is yes...if you have symptomatic tethering without permanent damage it is still useful. Most untethering is done in childhood because it is growth that makes the tethering symptomatic and potentially devastating with continued growth. In adulthood the growth part is not an issue but if there is traction on the cord for some reason (spina bifida, tumor, scarring, other) it can still help.

My four month old is having surgery for a tethered spinal cord. Recovery? What to expect? We Answered:
The recovery will depend on exactly what kind of surgery your baby is having. There are a lot of surgeries to correct the various problems associated with tethered spinal cord syndrome. In general, your baby will be cranky. He/she will probably want to suck on a pacifier a lot. The nurses will give you a ton of info to help you with positioning, pain, feeding, etc. Just remember to never give more pain medication than prescribed. As mom, you know what is the best soothing things for him/her. My girl always did like me to gently rub her arm or back. This has soothed her through surgery pain, scraped knees, and more. Do what has always worked and the nurses will help you with the rest of the details specific to your baby.
And try to control your anxiety. Babies pick up on it and this can make them more anxious which increases their pain perception. I know it's hard, but taking a few deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed can help. Good luck and godspeed.

I will say a prayer. Hope the little one is okay.Harold Said:
could anyone tell me about spinal cord stimulation surgery? We Answered:
Hi Teresa,Spinal cord stimulator implantation has certainly come a long way! I assist with these surgeries often. They are done as an out-patient procedure. You are given wonderful drugs to drift off to sleep while we are preparing to insert the lead. Once we start with the positioning of the lead to find the ideal coverage for you; you are more awake and can talk to us to tell us when you have the best feelings. After finding all of the coverage areas; you can, once again, snooze on!
The group that I work with is a huge anesthesiology practice; about 150 doctors and ten of those specialize in Pain Management/Medicine.
I have had back surgery once, about ten years ago and I feel great knowing that if I ever do have problems again, I know exactly who to see!
Good luck to you; let me know how you're doing.

Why the physician doesn't explain risk factors of spinal cord surgery to the patients? We Answered:
Before any surgery, it's required to get informed consent. It's done by either the surgeon or an assistant such as a PA or NP.Informed consent includes the general risks of any surgery and the known risks of the planned surgery.
It's the MD/DO/NP?PAs responsibility to explain the case and the risks. It's the patient's responsibility to listen and ask questions.
