Would anyone on here have Stem Cell surgery? We Answered:
yes! this is why I don't want ignorant jesus freaks passing laws that could wind up putting medical progress back. i was born with aortic stenosis. ive had three heart surgeries and have one more looming in my far future. i would much rather have my valve replaced by human cells instead of a pig's. this is why we have to stay CHOICE. christianity holds society back. think where we could be medically if the christians didn't bring on the dark ages! science illuminates. religeon darkens.Nicole Said:
How much is stem cell surgery for the pancreas? (Diabetes)? We Answered:
Stem cell surgery is largely experimental, and only available on a few trials last I heard. Also, last I heard, it required the cells from (already) aborted human feotuses, so not a lot of support for making it more widespread, I'm guessing.A more viable option is a pancreas transplant, but that's risky, and doesn't usually happen unless you also need another organ transplant (in which case they'll do them both at once, since the risk is similar either way).
Basically I don't think there's much realistic hope for either at the moment. The most significant breakthrough for the average diabetes sufferer is likely to be "closed loop" blood glucose monitoring / insulin delivery systems -- basically an artificial pancreas. They have both parts of this working now, but are probably still 5 or 10 years from combining the two into a complete solution.
All that said, I'll be watching this question in case anyone's heard better news.
