Trigger Thumb Surgery

Julia Said:

Has anyone out there had surgery for trigger thumb? What is recuperation like, and how long does it take?

We Answered:

I haven't but I did find this info for you regarding the recuperation period after surgery.

Recovery:
If therapy resolves the triggering, the patient can expect full recovery, as long as the affected finger(s) do not experience constant triggering. The goal is to prevent recurrent symptoms and triggering that can exacerbate the swelling, causing a vicious circle.

If surgery is performed on the finger, the patient can expect a pretty good recovery, as the sheath is cut away and there is nothing left to restrict tendon glide. The surgeon will instruct the patient on post-op limitations and motions to avoid. It is generally considered minor surgery and most surgeons recommend only a day or two of rest, followed by immediate and active use of the hand.

I had trigger thumb surgery on 10/27/06. It's infected; I've been taking Bactrim DS for two weeks. Vancosin?

We Answered:

OH BOY YOU GOT THE MRSA!!!!

you poor thing! That is a NIGHTMARE to get rid of, but it can be done. Stay with the bactrim but you'll eventually have to switch it off, and be on antibiotics a lonnnng time if it's really ensconced in your body.

Poor thing. I'm really sorry about the MRSA...Nobody believes me when I say how nasty it can be. Munya knew someone who had it (Ok, it was Sammy Sosa) and it was verrrry painful!
Hopefully you wont need any skin cut out.

Trigger Thumb?

We Answered:

hi there, my dad had a trigger finger.... that is what i have known it to be never a thumb but there is always the first for everything. trigger finger is caused by a growth on the tendent that pulls finger/thumb down to look like a trigger. my dad had this and had to have his hand operated on to take the ball like growth off his tendent and his finger is fine.

i just looked this up....this gives a more clear understanding

Trigger finger is a condition in which one of your fingers or your thumb catches in a bent position. Your finger or thumb may straighten with a snap — like a trigger being pulled and released. If trigger finger is severe, your finger may become locked in a bent position.

An often painful condition, trigger finger is caused by a narrowing of the sheath that surrounds the tendon in the affected finger. People whose work or hobbies require repetitive gripping actions are most susceptible to this condition. Trigger finger is also more common in women than in men, and in anyone with diabetes.

Treatment of trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, varies depending on the severity of the condition. Treatment ranges from rest to medications to surgery.

I am not sure about it being diagnosed that young however my husband did have trigger finger when we were first married . His doctor told him to do exersises and they have helped he doesnt have the condition anymore . I will say my husband was caused from stressing the fingers to much at work. Good luck but before i tired surgery i would get some other opions from doc and physical therapist. Here is a decent article that includes some other options to try first

How soon can I drive etc. after surgery for trigger thumb?

We Answered:

I would discuss it with your physician, but generally you can drive as soon as you are done using precription pain relievers, and it doesn't hurt you to use the controls.

Debbie Said:

c an a trigger thumb after surgery cause 3 bulging disc in the neck no pain in neck/shoulder?

We Answered:

Not that I am aware of. Trigger thumb is cured by surgery, remove the node, so I cannot see how that could cause 3 bulging discs in your neck? Have you had a MRI on your neck? Best of Luck

Virginia Said:

anyone have trigger thumb, and can it be cured without surgery or cortisone shots?

We Answered:

Trigger thumb is an involuntary, sometimes painful condition. It is named after the clicking of the affected fingers, or popping of the joint, that can interfere with the function of the hand during routine activities as the fingers or thumb bend toward the palm (a movement referred to as flexion). I know that there is an oil in Australia that helps with joint pain and arthritic pain. It is 100% natural and is dubbed the 'Miracle' oil over there. It is available in the UK and indeed all round the world. I think if you used this it would sort out the problem and save the need for surgery. I've put the Aussie link and the UK link for you. Hope this helps.
