Types Of Surgery
Rosa Said:
What types of surgery are available for shoulder dislocation? We Answered:
I subluxed my shoulder 13 times over about 18 months and decided to have surgery in 1992. Then, it was called a putti-plat where they take part of the chest muscle and reattached it over the front of the joint to stop it coming out again. When I had it done, it was an open procedure (a scar aout 8 inches long) but unless your surgery was complicated, they may be able to do it via an arthroscopic approach (3-5 small incisions). However, surgery has progressed a lot since I had it done and I am now a physical therapist! Are you in the UK? That was where I had my procedure done. I would suggest going to see your GP and ask their opinion. I would also contact the consultant directly and ask for an appointment. Go into the appointment asking what is the most appropriate procedure for your particular problem - instability can be caused by numerous factors in the shoulder joint and it is difficult to advise what procedure is most appropriate for your particular condition.
After the appointment with the consultant, research the surgery throroughly. If you are able to discuss the surgery with the physiotherapist to gain their opinion, all the better.
I regained full motion to my shoulder after the surgery. I competed in the sport of triathlon afterwoulds for a few years without any problems. If you can go back to the physiotherapist before the surgery or really work at the exercises to get as strong as possible, your outcome will be that much better. Focus on strengthening the muscles around your shoulder blade and the rotator cuff muscles.
Good luck!

How many different types of surgery are there for ovary removal? We Answered:
I'm assuming that you're having your ovary removed for cystic disease rather than for cancer as no surgeon would likely perform an ovarian cancer operation as a laparoscopic procedure. If the surgery is to remove a single ovary, it can either be done open or laparoscopically. If you are having a hysterectomy performed with it, it can be done vaginally.Numerous studies have been done comparing laparoscopic approaches with open approaches to surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is associated with longer operating times, but shorter hospital stays and less postoperative pain. I don't do many GYN cases, but the laparoscopic cases I do typically result in much less pain than open procedures. After a laparoscopic surgery, the gas is evacuated from the abdominal cavity. A small residual amount may remain and this can irritate the diaphragm causing referred pain to the shoulders typically. This usually resolves in a day or two as the gas is reabsorbed by your body. Incisional pain from a large incision is usually much worse than the pain from retained gas in the peritoneal cavity.
If ovarian cancer is suspected, you will need an open surgery with total hysterectomy and removal of the ovaries with lymph node sampling and debulking of metastasized tumor. This doesn't really sound like what you've got, though.

how many types of surgery are there for the treatment of colorectal cancer? We Answered:
There are many different types of surgery and different names for the operations. However the two main procedures are:partial removal of the large bowel with rejoining of the two ends of bowel so that bowel function is normal
partial removal of the large bowel without rejoining of the two ends of bowel. This leaves a stoma (opening) on the abdominal wall that is fitted with a bag to collect waste and the lower end of the bowel is just sewn over leaving a stump at the rectum. This sort of operation is sometimes done initially and then the two ends are rejoined at a later date.
Hope this helps!
