Can you please tell me about all types of obesity weight loss surgeries? We Answered:
Hi there,Here's a general overview of the 7 most popular and/or effective procedures:
1 - Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is a combination restrictive/malabsorbtive procedure that has a relatively low complication rate when considering its high levels of excess weight lost and significant improvement in co-morbidities. Its popularity also means that there are more surgeons out there with enough procedures under their belt to improve your chances for a good outcome.
2 - Adjustable gastric banding (i.e. Lap band surgery) has a lower risk of serious complications, and for those who are not 100% sure that they’re ready to permanently change their body, it is completely reversible and can be easily converted into a more extreme procedure down the road. Unfortunately, it has a very high variability in weight loss from patient to patient, and is associated with more minor and annoying complications.
3 - The duodenal switch is probably the most effective procedure for the super-obese as long-term weight loss seems to be better than any other procedure. The trade-off is that it has the highest rate of serious complications and the most intensive bariatric vitamin adherence requirements.
4 - Vertical banded gastroplasty (i.e. "stomach stapling") has some positives, especially for patients with certain health problems. But in general, it is considered an out-of-date procedure and its risks may be too high to justify the rewards.
5 - Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (i.e. Gastric sleeve surgery) needs more long-term research, but so far it looks like a safer option that results in similar weight loss to more common procedures. The long-term fear is that the stomach pouch could stretch over time, but there are minimally invasive procedures available that could tighten a loosened stomach if necessary.
6 & 7 - Mini gastric bypass surgery and Transoral Gastric Volume Reduction (TGVR) both look like promising (and possible less expensive) types of bariatric surgery, but neither has enough long-term research available.
I hope this VERY high level overview gives you a good starting point for additional research. A more complete description and comparison of each procedure can be found at: http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/…
Good luck!
Jeff

wife wants weight loss surgery? We Answered:
A close friend o mine has gastric bypass surgery and the doctors warned her of the risks and she decided that she was willing to take the risk and it has worked wonders for her. At first she had trouble with nausea and vomiting, but after she learned that she could only eat VERY small amounts of food at a time she did much better. It has been 4 years now and she has lost over 200 pounds. Good luck to you and your wife if she chooses to have this done. Be very careful when picking your surgeon, check him out.Virgil Said:
