Weight Loss Surgery Options
Crystal Said:
For someone witha BMI of 45-46 is Weight loss surgery a good option? We Answered:
Each individual is different. When diet and exercise are faithfully applied and unsuccessful, surgery is an option. The Roux-en-Y procedure induces a permenant state of primary malnutrition, meaning you can't absorb nutrients effectively. I have seen some really impressive changes from both surgery and old fashioned exercise and "push-away" from the table. If you decide on surgery, consider the permanance of the change. Aside from the medical complications that are still frequent, and significant, if you were to have another issue that required additional nutritional support (cancer, say) getting enough calories to sustain you would be difficult at best.Deciding about surgery for obesity
General reasons to have surgery:
Depending on the type of surgery, you may lose from about 30% to 80% of your excess weight (the weight above what is considered healthy).
You have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher and a health problem, such as diabetes.
You have tried diet, activity, and medications and have lost little or no weight.
Losing weight will reduce related health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, and sleep apnea.
Are there other reasons that you might want to have surgery?
General reasons not to have surgery:
You have a history of alcohol abuse.
You have untreated depression or another major psychiatric disorder.
You are younger than 18 or older than 65.
Risks common to all surgery for weight loss include infection of the abdominal cavity, a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism), gallstones, and nutritional deficiencies that can result in anemia or osteoporosis.1, 4
There is a risk of death. Fewer than 3 in 200 (1.5%) die after surgery for weight loss.
Surgery is expensive if insurance does not cover it.
You will only be able to eat small amounts of food after the surgery, which can cause nutritional problems.
Rapid weight loss may cause an excess of flabby skin, which may require more surgery to remove it.

Should weight loss surgery be the only option? We Answered:
nope, surgery is the LAST OPTION, when the person on extreme obesity and it has become deterrent on his part, that's the time we apply the surgery. people should learn first to discipline themselves through diet and physical activity. surgery won't be effective if the person will adopt the same dietary habits of overindulging.Fred Said:
Is lap-band surgery a good option for weight loss?We Answered:
Weight loss surgery-like lap band surgery have become very common and very safe now. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges Obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Fly2india4health Consultants. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients, as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS.They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of Healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
My cousin got her Obesity surgery done there and she is more than very happy with the results. She is all praise for Fly2india4health Consultants. She paid just 20% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her. Hope this helps

Weight Loss Surgery? Whats your opinion and what are some options? We Answered:
I have no personal experience with the surgery ... but have 5 friends who had gastric bypass and 1 who had the lapband. The commitment is to change one's eating habits. Period. One person did and has maintained a healthy lifestyle. The other 4, including the lapband did not change their eating habits and didn't exercise and all have gained back weight -- weighing less than before but still not healthy.
I can't give you an opinion ... all I can do is suggest that you make a list of all your questions and speak to a few doctors and a few facilities to find out as much as you can about everything!!!
Good luck!
